What are some of the pros and cons of attending Hamilton?

Hey

I personally went to go visit the school a few weeks ago and I got this overall impression: Hamilton students are very friendly, socially, mentally, and physically active people who all enjoy Hamilton very much. The campus is nice, the facilities are nice, and the college is, overall, a very nice college.

IMO, there's nothing bad that you can say about Hamilton College, however, nor is there anything good. Hamilton, to me, is a nice, New England, selective, liberal arts college. It's a perfectly good school to attend. It just didn't bring forth anything INTERESTING to me...It kinda of lacked the charm and innovation that some of the other schools presented.

so did Grinnell give you that charm?( if you visited or knew somebody that did).

My dad went to Grinnell actually, and though I haven't visited, my dad tells me all about his Grinnellian experience and I've had a Grinnell rep visit my school.

I would say that Grinnell most definetely has the charm that Hamilton lacks.

I chose Hamilton over Grinnell because the latter was much further away, and I viewed them as equals, so it came to that. They are academically equal, and have been so for some time.

The nicest thing about Hamilton is the residential aspect. Everyone lives on campus and eats in the dining hall at least once a day, so you get to know everyone and make new friends as a junior and senior, long after people at most schools have gone off with their cliques.

Whether or not you like Hamilton, I would not say it is correct that it doesn't "stand out". The whole history, with the creation of an avante guard women's college and then absorbing it amidst much tumult and the very different path the school took toward co-education make it a bit quirky to this day. Hamilton has always had among the highest percentages of alumni givers and a very emotional alumni body, who sometimes get very worked up. That tends to show that something about the school was a bit different and engendered intense emotions for those who went there, satisfied or not.

as a current hamilton student, let me lay out one con. the two sides of campus (dark and light) are very different and very seperate. If you are not a big partier or a jock, living on the light side could be hell (also, preppy clothes are recommended). the more laid back person may like the darkside better, though it is far removed from most things going on on campus.

Correction, everyone does not live on campus. There are some students who live in a sorority house in Clinton, some students who are from Clinton and choose to commute to Hamilton, and some students who live on 3 College Hill Road and G-Road (both of which I do not consider "on campus"). I think jerseygirl88 described the light and dark side pretty accurately in terms of the types of students they attract.

The most obvious con is the darn weather. It is always cold up here. It starts snowing sometime around Halloween and wont end until late April, early May. The weather here blows.

Pros: academics and small community (although this can be hell for some people).

Being an international, I don't know much about the common contraception of Hamilton. I have applied simply based on information of the internet and college books (very unlike me..).
So, now I find my self accepted, and likely to attend, a school I honestly don't know much about. I am somewhat of a control freak, so this is really stressing me out :). Can someone please help me with everything from what the strongest departments are, to what the student body is like and if it is good-looking ;) (I have grown up in what Americans might would see as an upper middleclass environment, but have no problems socializing outside that group of people..), Clinton, if it is cut throat competition, etc.?

^^uh, I think you mean conception. Contraception means something else entirely...

Upps, well good that you were around then.
