Hamilton Vs. Reed

Hey guys.

I am a senior who has deposited money at Hamilton College.

Today, I got a call from Reed that I am admitted (got off from the waitinglist).

I am truly excited but I am now in "panic."

I am an international student from S. Korea and I wish to go to Law School after college.

I wish to major in Political Science and maybe minor in Creative Writing.

I know that both schools are great and I can't really make a sharp decision.

But what do you think about this "happy" troublesome concern I have?

You’re in an awesome position. Congratulations on Reed and Hamilton!

Ultimately, you’ve got to go with your gut if things like money aren’t factoring into your decision. Both are top-notch schools and I’m sure both schools will prepare you very well for Law School. As a Hamilton student, I will certainly vouch for the college on the Hill. No course requirements, a beautiful campus, and a genuinely friendly student body are all things I like about this place.

Hamilton also has a cool 3-3 law program with Columbia, a very large government (their version of political science) department, and an incredible focus on writing.

I don’t know much about Reed but I’m sure its great too. Its a wonderful position to be in!

Thanks guys for comments. ClimblingfreakJr, do you know how many students actually make it to the 3-3 Law Program?

Hamilton and Reed are like comparing Apples and Oranges. About the only thing they have in common is that if you are serious about it, you can get a fine education.

I’m from Portland and all I have to say is that it is one of the most AMAZING cities in the world, especially if you are coming from another country. The down side about Hamilton (I will also be entering the class of 2013) is that it is in a small town more or less in the middle of no where. Reed on the other hand is only 10-20 minutes from the city and has a pretty cool campus. Another thing that should factor into your decision is the weather! You’re either going to Hamilton for snow, or Portland for rain. We have the most incredible summers though… One last thing to consider is the people. Reed has a reputation for being a hippie school with extremely liberal students. I would say this is true but after speaking with a faculty member, they have surprisingly conservative coursework and requirements (unlike Hamilton which doesn’t have distribution requirements). I know from visiting that although Hamilton students are liberal, it definitely isn’t a hippie school from what I experienced. Anyways, good luck making your decision! I hope this helped. Either way you’ll get an excellent education!
