Hampshire college vs University of Redlands

Hello!

This is my first thread here on cc as I am closing the deal on finally choose a school to go to next year.some background I am a HS senior, and I consider myself a moderately liberal person.applied to Oberlin ED my favorite school by far and got rejected.

So I applied to hampshire and u of r. Now I have been accepted and visited both schools, I am deciding between the two. Johnston program at Redlands sounds a lot like the hampshire's design your own major thing, and both schools as far as I know are pretty close in terms of selectivity. Redlands is a lot more affordable for me since the tuition is way lower and they offer me a better scholarship grant.

What would you choose between these two? I am concerned of hampshire's extreme left campus and not being able to fit in that well(I don't have problem with drugs, but for those who go to hampshire, do you ever find it excessive too overbearing?) and for Redlands, I am concerned of the general safety of the area, being in middle of the inland empire. would you describe Redlands as a quirky place, or preppy?

I want to hear all the inputs you have so hopefully I could make an informed decision.

How much is the cost difference? What will you have to take out in terms of loans?

15,000 in difference. And I am not eligible for the fafsa so both are just merit based scholarships

Can you afford $15,000 a year more for Hampshire than Redlands? How much will you need to take out each year in loans? If you can’t afford Hampshire, then you only have one financially viable option.

I can afford the price difference, so both options are viable. My parent is paying my entire tuition for 4 years so I am not loaning anything either. A good fit is more important than anything for me and I have trouble deciding which one fits me better

Any more input would be appreciated

You wouldn’t be “loaning”, you would be borrowing. Go to Redlands, enjoy the sun and the lower price.

My son goes to Redlands and is having an excellent experience there. He didn’t start out as the most academically-minded student, but he’s grown tremendously in terms of his study habits, his raw knowledge, his ability to build on what he’s learned in his courses, and his writing skills. He’s not in the Johnston Center and I’m not sure he has any friends who are in it either. He’s more a middle-of-the-road kind of kid, and I think the Johnston Center students tend to be a little more quirky and untraditional. I’ll PM you the name of a CC poster whose daughter is in the Johnston Center.

There’s a great deal of school spirit and pride.

The town is generally safe although theft is an issue.
