Handwriting vs. Typing?

Is it better to handwrite your applications or do them online? Does it even matter? Can you handwrite the application but type up the essays?

Colleges prefer the online submissions WAY MORE than the handwritten ones. It's much, much easier to read and more accessible. Although...... I wonder if you have a ridiculously neat handwriting, it would be more impressive to the Admission Officers?

Not that I have experience with applying, but I doubt neat handwriting would make a difference.
I mean, even a person with the most sloppy penmanship in the universe could spend hours upon hours transcribing everything perfectly if it really made a difference.
Thanks though- I'll do it online when the time comes.

if you send in handwritten things, most colleges actually scan it onto the computer records and dispose of the hard copy

A number of top colleges penalize you if you handwrite and not send in your
app online.

The penalization is by ways of extra fees, delayed responses etc.

But could I break my application up - submit the common online and send in my essays and supplements by mail?

Try to do it all online or all on paper. If the rest is online, the essay should be as well. An exception is the recommendation letters. I didn't submit a supplement, so I don't know about supplements.

My son's favorite school appears to have a 20 page app. packet on line that you must print out and send in. It's in a pdf but we don't have the version of adobe where you can edit the form. His handwriting is terrible. Should we invest the money in upgrading adobe so he can type the app?

No, tell him to write neatly and legibly.

And he won't have to talk about his neurological problems in his essay, because they'll be able to tell from his handwritiing!

lol
you could also try a school or public library computer... or a friend's... or one in the office... computers are everywhere

Most colleges prefer all online, but if you have to do handwritten for some reason, do it ALL handwritten. Seriously. They won't see your personality more if you handwrite the essays, they'll just be annoyed. I think a lot of schools that I applied to specify that rule- choose paper or online, not both.

And if you do handwritten application, your essay should still be typed, just not submitted online. Same too with teacher rec letters--the letter absolutely should be typed, but the form can be handwritten.

Your goal is to make things as easy as possible for the admissions counselor reading your application. That means type it, whether you submit it on line or on paper.

online is way better.

I just wish online you could attach more than one file.
