A little while ago I received a handwritten letter from a coach at princeton after i had emailed the head coach stating my interest and resume. The handwritten letter had that coach's email and said thank you for your interest and i look forward to learning more about you in the upcoming months, feel free to keep me updated! My question is, is a handwritten letter from a coach a good sign or a sign at all that they are interested in recruiting you?

A handwritten letter from a coach is a thoughtful response to your inquiry. Having been through the process first hand with our now-freshman son, I can say that recruiting at Princeton looks significantly different than at other D1 schools. Princeton coaches need to be very careful that the prospective athlete meets the rigorous academic requirements to gain admission to Princeton, as well as ensuring that the prospective athlete will be competitive at the D1 level.

It sounds from your post as though the letter you received was not from the head coach, but perhaps an assistant coach? This may be the person who does the initial contacts with potential recruits and who develops a “short list” for the head coach to look at. You’ve been invited to give that coach more information as it becomes available. Showing continued interest in the school and providing regular updates on your athletic and academic accomplishments will help the coaches assess whether or not you are a viable candidate.

Good wishes!

Cantiger, The Head coach responded to my email but the head distance coach and head XC coach is the one that sent me the handwritten letter, and thanks for the response!
