Happy to answer questions about Deerfield Academy!

Silly- they should be free to use

We weren’t able to view the freshman dorm when on tour. We got to see JL dorm, which I now discover is apparently the Ritz Carlton of dorms. Kinda makes sense though, of course they’ll show you the best ones when you’re still trying to choose between schools.

And I hear there are 53 freshman girls and 53 freshman boys in two sides of the same building, joined by common rooms. Each freshman gets a roomie.
Even basic math tells me that there are certainly not all doubles with 53 students. Is there a triple, or a single (or some of both)?

Who do you use for your local laundry service - did your student arrange it or does it get mentioned in the stuff/link we are about to receive?

And thank your kid for proposing free laundry. Fingers crossed, although I’m not expecting miracles. Hopefully, if all the other freshman sign up for the E&R service, the machines in the basement will be readily available. My biggest laundry concern is not kid actually doing it, but more trying to squeeze in laundry wash and dry time between sports, dinner and study hall.

Hello,
I had a quick question. Do you have a recommendation for an orthodontist I can transfer my son over to. He has braces that will come off in about a year. Thanks!

Usually, orthodontist visits are handled by the original orthodontist during breaks, which may result in braces having to be on longer than normal.

Emergencies can be handled locally, and I am sure the Health Center has recommendations. If @Golfgr8 has a specific orthodontist to recommend, she can PM you, but posting provider names here is not allowed.

In the interest if giving you info to prepare you for dorm life before you arrive, here are helpful tidbits:

  • Yes - Both JL & LM are the nicest dorms IMO for Sophomores - there is a dorm for upper-classroom boys “New Dorm” “OBC” or “Margaritaville”
there used to be a surf board over the front door (think it might be gone). I hear that a couple of dorms have heated towel racks and really nice TVs. The kitchens in some dorms are really nice

  • Doing laundry in the Freshman Village can be a challenge because the laundry room is shared by both the girls and boys - and there are only a few washers and dryers for all the Freshman. There is usually a mountain of clothing that is stacked on a table because people take out clothing so they can use the machine.

You are right @ dorm room configurations. There are a some triples. The triple rooms are huge. The proctors are in singles. Kiddo’s bad room was so small that the proctor took a double and made it a single. When do Freshman do laundry? It depends on your dorm parent/resident. There is one dorm resident who is really not thoughtful about student schedules/stress (insert descriptive word here) and won’t let you do laundry during study hall. Again, let me know if you (like Kiddo) are the lucky winner of that one. The other dorm residents are flexible about when you can do laundry at night.

  • FWIW - Tour guides usually show the mid-range dorm (Holiday Inn or LaQuinta quality) , so it’s interesting you were able to see JL (Ritz). There are a wide variety of dorm choices after Freshman Village.

  • I can’t promote a specific business publicly, but I will try to DM you about options.

Hello @CALImom1971 -

You can call the Health Service and ask them about local orthodontists. Should you need urgent care for a broken band/wire, there is someone to take you there.

Same with dermatology care. Some students are on acne medication that requires close follow up or visits during the term. The Health Center has referrals for this derm specialist.

Things that you may not know @Deerfied 2.0

*EVERY student gets a new Mac Book computer - and you get to keep it! Even though you may have your own, it’s easier to use the Deerfield issued laptop.

  • You do not have to buy your own text books

  • Many teachers have your books waiting for you at the table on the first day of class

  • Check the Deerfield “Bulletin” - click the link on the website for important information about events, readings, lists. etc. Some of you kids don’t know about summer reading
.so check the Bulletin.

  • Some books have online codes

  • That first week of school there are a lot of community events to promote bonding - your kids will be busy.

  • Kids like to go down to the river
mostly in Spring.

  • Ask your Green Key about attire for different school events.

  • Choate Day is really a week of fun activities.

  • Get involved in EC’s during your Freshman year -it’s easier to get onto certain committees and/or boards if you start in 9th grade.

Im applying to Deerfield again after being waitlisted last year. What are my chances of being accepted this year? Does the acceptance rate increase or decrease sophomore year?

Happy to hear that news @victoriavictoria !

I can’t state the actual stats for acceptance rate Sophomore year, but our observations over 4 years of keeping track seems to be that there are more favorable odds for Sophomore year. The school adds about 50 more students to the Sophomore class. If you play a Varsity sport or play an instrument, it seems as though these students have the “something to offer” favored by the AO’s. Schedule an updated interview, show your interest, show how strong a student you are this year, etc. If you do play a sport, try to connect with the coach. If you do play an instrument or dance, do connect with that appropriate instructor or department chairperson. Market yourself as a strong candidate.
Bon Chance! :muscle:

Hope your kiddo got the dorm they wanted

If you are a First Year, enjoy the unique bonding experience of Freshman Village! You will get to know pretty much everyone in your class by living in the Freshman Village.

Thats good to hear! I had my interview a few days ago and mentioned that I swim. I didnt get the chance to give my interviewer my PB’s; do you think I should reach out to the swim coach and share those with them?

I keep waiting for information about the first tuition payment. Will we get a notification of some sort when it is due? I can’t find a bill on the portal, and I can’t remember what the initial paperwork said about when payments are due (we are doing the twice a year payments).

Please do not worry! When the school wants $$ they will find you! :money_mouth_face:

For Deerfield parents:

Electronic bills are accessible via the DA Info parent profile. There are links to set up your student’s One Card. You can also preorder via the “Laundry Card Request Form” a Laundry card by August 25th and their laundry card will be waiting for them in their enrollment packets when they arrive on campus :womans_clothes:

First step: Go to the DAinfo.deerfield.edu
Second step: Enter your password if you don’t have one call the school. If you have questions about billing, call the finance office @ 413-774-1407

Third step: Click on the tab that says My Actions. You should see a list of things you need to submit.
Fourth step: Check your mailbox for spam-junk mail - sometimes your firewall or mail system won’t recognize a new institution. There was an email sent out this week about checklist items.

  • You can always DM me for more specific contact information or if you need additional information!

Follow up! The billing statements are out
.and dorm assignments are out too. DM me if you want info @ specific dorms. Good luck everyone!

Yes. I thought of you when you posted recently that “When the school wants $$ they will find you!” I received the billing statement this week, of course they found me.

But everything else is eerily silent.
My kid received an email about dorm room chairs last week but, as a parent, I haven’t had any communication for weeks. Am I missing something? Should I have been receiving emails?
When do we get the official ‘recommended packing list’

Do you happen to know how I find out about ‘closed’ weekends when kids aren’t allowed off campus?

I feel your pain! Well, i used to
.but realized that they don’t start sending out packing lists for another couple of weeks. That is why you have good friends (parents & students) on CC to help you out!

In reality there are only a couple of closed weekends now that COVID is moving on. I believe the first weekend of school is closed - but if your kid has a big tournament or family event, you can get permission with the help of parents.

  • Just to add, Deerfield has its Parent Network page on its website - or a link to it. You can get good information there. Check the DPN page, or type it into the browser
You can always contact your Host Family, as they should be able to give you information.

Deerfield has new class schedule this year. For those of you students entering in another 7 weeks, you might want to check it out.

I wish that they provided detailed information to newbies about the calendar, and school breaks, when dorms are closed, if kids can stay in the dorm Sunday night of parent weekend (we have to leave Sunday and don’t know anyone). These things have been my biggest concerns as we don’t live close enough to pop over to pick up kiddo and it will take lots of coordination with our work schedules. Luckily I took a guess and found a hotel for parent weekend but pickings were slim a month ago (and I still don’t know if we need to worry about kiddo for Sunday night).
