I don’t understand the difference between the transition words…
In 1932, the well-known Mexican muralist David Alfaro Siquieros was commissioned to paint a mural on the second story exterior wall of a historic building in downtown Los Angeles. Siquieros was asked to celebrate tropical America in his work, which he accordingly titled America Tropical. He painted the mural’s first two sections, featuring images of a tropical rainforest and a Maya pyramid, during the day. (ALSO,) to avoid scrutiny, Siqueiros painted the final section of the mural, the centerpiece a night.
However indicates a complete change in thoughts sorta like in “I’m a man. However, I sing like a woman.”
Although is usually used when we’re saying that we’re considering something but we reach the opposite conclusion. Ex: “Although I sing like a woman, I’m a man.”
This isn’t an incredible gramatical explanation but it’s how it makes sense to me. I hope I helped!
An although clause can’t stand on it’s own. It needs a second part to contradict it or it’s not gramaticaly correct.
^ Just what coldsummer said: “Although he painted it at night.” is not a complete sentence. “Although he painted it at night, it looked great” would be.
Pick up your grammar book and master the difference between subordinating conjunctions and conjunctive adverbs. Students confuse these all the time. But they do different jobs, have different qualities, and get punctuated very differently – despite their superficial similarities.
“Although” is for concession; “however” is for contrast.
A concession clause shows contrast by placing limits on the idea of the main clause. The main clause shows surprising or unexpected results.
although=in spite of the fact that, despite the fact that
Although it was raining, he went for a walk in the park.
It is surprising that he went for a walk, given that it was raining. It is not surprising that he painted the mural at night, given that he wanted to avoid scrutiny.
