Hard time writing college essays

I haven't written one essay so far. I've spent a lot of time trying to write different essays, but I usually just give up. I think my problem is that college application essays are so important, and I want to make them perfect, so I spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to write an essay perfectly the first time.

I don't know. I'm posting this to see if anyone else feels the same way. Who has no problem with writing the essays and can offer some tips? Thanks.

Yes. I totally feel you. how’s it going?

One trick that works for some students is to write a draft like you are writing to a friend or relative, as if they have asked you an essay prompt. Just spit it all out, not worrying about grammar or punctuation. Be as informal as you might be with that person in real life, just get it written down.

Or try this: If you were chatting with your favorite aunt, uncle, or coach, or the friend of an older sibling, and they asked about who has had a significant impact on your life, what would you tell them? Pretend you are having a conversation with them. What follow up questions would they ask and how would you answer?

Sometimes that takes the pressure off to write something perfect.

You can easily polish that letter or conversation into an essay, that truly is in your voice.

What other activity did you do perfectly the first time?

Aim first to write a draft. Don’t worry about length or perfection, just get some ideas on paper.

You will be able to fine tune the essay in later drafts.

My advice, just start writing. You have to stop being afraid of failure and chase the essay down the rabbit hole so to say. I just wrote about whatever my mind was thinking at the time. I have written like 4-5 semi complete essays.
