Hard to find Sheet Music

Hi all,
My DD has an audition coming up and wants to use a song that isn't available on music notes and can't find the vocal selection book online. None of our local music stores have it either. Any other online resources??? Thanks so much!

Is it from a show? sometimes there are song books from full shows that have selections not available individually

The last couple of years there has been facebook groups for the students going through auditions. Last year I think it was called the unified -not sure what this years group is. Many of the kids ask each other if any if them have whatever sheet music they need and often they find it that way.

There’s a free sharing site we stumbled upon a few years ago that’s been instrumental in building my S’s collection of sheet music: pianofiles.com. Members basically list the sheets they already own, which are added to the vast database of sheets on the site that can be searched by anyone looking for a particular song, score, anthology, etc. When you find someone who has the sheets you want, you email them (it’s private/anonymous a la Craigslist) and usually offer to trade something from your list that they might be looking for. You’d need to have a scanner if your music isn’t already in PDF form. Lots of different genres: musical theatre, pop, rock, opera, art music…,

The legality and ethics of obtaining copies of music from pianofiles.com is highly questionable. I am not an expert, but it sure seems to me that copying a song and distributing it to someone else is a violation of copyright law and is not protected by any stretch of “fair use.”

Agree with you EmsDad. Students embarking on this career path should be cognizant of using an artist’s material without paying for that privilege. Someday it may be their own artistic material that is being shared illegally.

What’s the song? Easier to point you in the right direction.

If it is a newer song check http://newmusicaltheatre.com/</a> or the composer’s website and email the composer directly if it is not for sale there.

This is quite long, but well worth reading. In this, Jason Robert Brown tries to explain to a teenager why it is wrong to copy music without paying for it, but she just doesn’t seem to understand. I think all MT kids should read this! <a href=“FIGHTING WITH TEENAGERS: A COPYRIGHT STORY - Jason Robert Brown”>http://jasonrobertbrown.com/2010/06/29/fighting-with-teenagers-a-copyright-story/</a></p>

My dd actually posted this – and your anwers have helped significanly! Thank you. She actually found the score at the library – shocking! xoxo

Interlibrary loan is another great resource. You can see if it is available at another library, and they can send it to your library for you to borrow. Pretty great!

For hard to find sheet music, I have actually emailed the composer and purchased the music directly from him. He even offered to send us the piano accompaniment for a very reasonable fee!
