What can you tell a parent in the midst of a still early search about Hartwick?

Found this on Collegesofdistinction.com ( good site by the way) and also some CCer's mentioned Hartwick.

I like the Pine Lake campus and looks like nice school.

My s wants a rural school( woodsy, farms etc) in NY. He does not know what he wants to study yet. Probally along the lines of something technical, perhaps engineering but maybe law enforcement or political science.

Right now I am looking at a whole range from military colleges to LACs(not top ones - avg small good private schools in NY and the SUNY's)

I liked Clarkson( just from website surfing) because it seems to be a techy science school in an outdoor rural small school setting. This is the kind of thing he is looking for, also they host ROTC, another thing he is considering.

St Lawrence looks interesting too, but both these schools are far north from us ( Long Island) He would like to stay w/in 2-3 hrs or so of Long Island if he wants to travel home from time to time.

Our family has a vacation home in the Monticello area a few miles from the Delaware river(NYside) He would love to go to college not far from there.

Hartwick looks like it might fit. Would like to know more before I think about visiting.

I know SUNY Oneonta and Hartwick are neighbors......what can you tell me of this school? I think I am leaning more towards Hartwick though.

Any students? Parents? Friends? Friend of a friend?

I've heard really good things about it: top academics, a liberal, fun student body. Location hurts them however. It's featured in the Fiske Guide, have a read for an in-depth description.

I agree, the location isn't the best - somewhat isolated. Son and I visited in the summer 2004. The campus is well-kept but extremely compact with little open space and built into the side of a hill. You really need to be part mountain goat to like it there. Hartwick came off son's list immediately.

Hartwick is on S's final list. We are heading up to visit a second time toward the end of the month. This will actually be our fourth time visiting Hartwick as we looked at it for D 5 years ago and then she did an overnight there. We were VERY impressed with faculty we met when we were there in April. After our tour, we went back to one of the buildings on our own. A faculty member offered us help and any info. We told him we were interested in a different department and he found someone for us who was very friendly and welcoming. S liked what he had to say, so we will go back and check it out further.

good luck with your return visit....let me know what you thought.

Location, town, student body, why does your son like it? Do you mind saying what he wants to study there if he knows yet?

Food, living conditions, classes etc........whatever you can tell me that would make us justify a visit since your son must like it if it's on his final list.

Thanks

luliztee ~ I sent you a PM

Hartwick has been undergoing a major transformation the last 4 years. Academic standards have risen considerably, fundraising is WAY up, a new academic building is planned, major renovations to dorms have been completed in addition to new athletic fields. Applications are also way up. This school is being 'found'. Definitely worth serious consideration for kids looking at upper middle colleges.
