Harvard 2024 Waitlist Thread

@jakezim I saw someone of reddit trying to do some type of stats calculations assuming that harvards waitlist practices are similar to yale’s. They pretty much concluded that the waitlist around as many applicants as they accept (so maybe around 1600 or less)

Search Harvard Common Data Set - Harvard does not ever officially disclose the number of applicants on their waitlist.

Oh, yes my bad haha

Been looking at these threads for Stanford and Yale and it doesn’t look like they have started taking anyone of the waitlist so who knows maybe everyone does it all at once or with all the uncertainty they need extra time

Didn’t Stanford and Yale already take people off of the WL?

@staylor1490 I’m committed to Yale right now, and I know of at least 2 people who have gotten off. Yale has a class directory where we can see enrollment, and the class is already full. As for Yale, there was one rumored acceptance, but I’m not sure if that’s confirmed.

I don’t know what this means for Harvard. Maybe they’e taking a bit longer this year with the first wave. Usually, the first wave has come on the second Tuesday of May, but since that has already passed, the actual date is all just speculation.

Dang, I hope the WL is better with Harvard!

Could it be that they are waiting to see how many people take a gap year now that there’s an extended deadline?
They may or may not be full now, but they’re waiting to see where the biggest holes are in their freshmen class, but they won’t know the full extent of that until after June.

@gogw1234 Could be the case, but I would hope that they would provide some update with how they are dealing with the waitlist. Similar to how MIT and Dartmouth did where they sent an email to all waitlistees saying the class is full, but they are keeping the waitlist until the summer. Something interesting with Harvard is that they still haven’t given out info about the yield, which could be a good thing. Historically, the yield was realized about a week ago and Harvard has not done it yet. Don’t know why.

I don’t think the class is full because they’ve offered AO interviews to people on the waitlist. They wouldn’t be doing that if they weren’t planning on taking people off.

Here from the Stanford WL thread. We’re almost certain that Stanford has not taken people off the waitlist. We had only known of one person who claimed to get off, and it looks like they lied. Responses from AOs seem to indicate that they’re just taking longer than usual and haven’t yet used it. We’re in the same boat as you guys, and we’re pretty sure Stanford is waiting to see how many students take gap years this year before releasing, possibly in June at some point. I hope that’s helpful.

This post kind of only pertains to someone in my situation, but:

I called the admissions office the day after decisions came out to ask about taking a gap year, and the person said yes. Since everyone is now talking about gap years and yield, I decided to call the admissions office again about 5 minutes ago to ask if anything has changed. They said that if I’m off the waitlist I can still request a deferral.
Two things based on that:

  1. I’m happy I won’t have to make a really tough decision if I’m accepted
  2. I don’t think that the long time to release the waitlist has anything to do with gap years, if they are letting people who are admitted from it to also defer.

Just speculation, but a bit of good news for me.

When you called any update on timing for waitlisted folks hearing?

Yale just pulled a friend of mine

It’s funny, but I had just the opposite reaction .

  1. If they’re giving out gap years easy as pie, then they could very well have a lot more of them to process and decisions to wait on. That alone could go a long way toward explaining the delay.
  2. By now they would normally know what their yield is, so she could easily have said to you that they’re not going to the wait list this year. But she didn’t. That suggests to me that they are going to the wait list and that the unusual circumstances we’re facing are the reason for the delay.

That’s good news for everyone if I’m reading the tea leaves correctly.

@highstats the person I spoke to said they can’t mention what stage they’re at, sadly.

Stanford just released their 1st wave of waitlist decisions. Apparently they are planning to release in stages, so there should be more waves.

Just curious, would you all definitely attend if you were accepted or are you on the fence. Did you state that you would attend in your LOCI regardless? Are you planning on a gap year?

Well it’s past 6pm on the West Coast. I’m clocking out. Have a nice weekend. See you guys Monday!

I really hope everyone is falling in love with their current commitment. if something changes that would be amazing, but I really hope everyone is not letting this process (especially in quarantine) drag on their mental health. we are all going to be fine and successful either way, but ofc good vibes and hope we all hear some good news! best wishes to everyone!!
