We already know that coronavirus is a devastating disease that can destroy lungs. We also already know that it’s having a huge impact on college admissions. However Harvard will not and is not obligated to admit everyone off the waitlist just because of COVID-19. After a certain point, most likely after today, H will know almost their exact yield so there is potential for movement this or next week.
Just so all of you know, Harvard students have the option to request a gap year after July 1. It’s just not guaranteed that their request will be accepted after July 1.
just had a massive heart attack because i got a call from a random number in boston but it just turned out to be a marriott hotel offering me a free stay. this officially sucks.
@9ptempel1 - I feel you. I think we are all on edge! Hoping it is all worth it in the end for all of us still hanging out here!
@xlandke - where did you get your info on the gap year?
@Mommabear1 I’m close friends with several Harvard students who inquired about gap years to their advisors and were told they could still request after July 1, but would only be guaranteed a gap year if they requested by July 1.
If yield isn’t as low as expected then it’s likely that Harvard will use the Z-list (admit into class of 2025) again this year as they have been for a long time. In normal years they give Z-list offers to around 50 applicants (although many are usually legacy).
Ugh, these Ivy League schools with their legacies and whatnot. It feels antiquated., like some confederate statue.
Ever since the lawsuit, legacy % has been decreasing in accelerated speed. Now that the appeal process is on, this trend won’t stop. Better for us non-legacies! My source said this year more z list offers were made to athlete recruits even before the gap app deadline. Quite sure not much NCAA Div1 sports this fall. Cornell and Brown have begun letting go assistant coaches across the board… More gap apps this year probably will imply less z list offer to wl? @waitlistedsenior where did you hear about the “50 z list a year” number? Insider or lawsuit docs?
That number was just from what I’ve seen in the past years threads. Also, isn’t the recruiting process for athletes much different than it is for normal applicants. I doubt any Division I team would force an athlete to take a gap year and lose a year of training.
@waitlistedsenior Yes. Official recruiting begins around July 1st before junior year of high school. Offers are made during summer nationals before senior year. Then likely letters go out in Oct or Nov. My cousin was a recruit, so I know. According to court documents, about 82% of recruited athletes were admitted in EA, RD and wl rounds. Then, Varsity Blue happened 14 months ago. H was not implicated but did an internal audit. A handful of coaches were let go over the summer. For Ivy recruits this year, plenty of them didn’t even get likely letters except at Princeton and Dartmouth, I heard. No one’s forced to take a gap year. It’s a z-list offer 2025, take it or leave it.
This year is weird overall. Lots of recruits were wait listed because Athletics Departments lost the bargaining power they have enjoyed for years. I suppose swimmers don’t need a college pool to train; other team sports do though… Not an athlete so not my business.
Hope some wl action happens next week too, guys. Going nuts. But my guess is first they announce Fall format, wait a week, count the gap total, then grace the wl…
limbosucks
how are y’all doing? haven’t gotten anything in NY today
Dartmouth basically said their class was full in early May but recently took quite a few people off so that might also be good news for us.
College: Fall Plan announcement date; Gap Year App deadline; WL ETA wave
Stanford: 6/3; Rolling; 6/23 [2nd], then before 7/31 final
Yale: 7/1; 7/15; before 7/31 final
Cornell: 7/2, 7/10, before 7/31 final
MIT: 7/6, Rolling, before 7/31 final
Dartmouth: 6/29, 7/10, ongoing since 7/1 final
From the above, safe to assume WL final round is sandwiched between Fall Plan announcement date and tuition due date, but after Gap App deadline.
Harvard: Early July, 7/1 but now extended, before 7/31? final
If this pattern holds, then nothing happens until a few days after Fall Plan is announced. Let’s hope they announce next week.
Happy Fourth, guys!
Let’s hope so. Happy Fourth, guys!
Harvard is announcing plans on Monday. I am not sure if those will be official plans or just what they are leaning towards.
I just checked my email to make sure - yes, it is just an update on the plans, so I doubt they will tell us 100% what 2020/21 will look like.
Yale splits first-years/sophomores into fall/spring respectively. Juniors and seniors can come back for the full year, but their housing situation is diferent than Harvard as a lot of upperclassmen live off campus.
thanks for the update!
OK, I guess I was wrong. It is decided. Only first-years allowed on campus and very few upperclassmen. All classes virtual.
