@myrfog No worries. Thanks for answering my questions. Your calcs are great. Did they by any chance separate the response among the freshmen segment?
@privatebanker Thank you for the insight! I agree, CMU is probably better astrophysics wise and definitely better if I choose to go after compsci, but I’m still holding out hope that Harvard would have a significantly better financial aid package if they choose to admit me. I had a friend who was committed to Tufts (similar aid as CMU) before he got off the H waitlist last year and he ended paying 55% of what he would have at Tufts. It would definitely be nice to save a couple thousand among all the COVID-related economic uncertainty, even if it means not having quite the same resources for astrophysics/compsci.
@LimboKid Yes, they separated the responses by graduating class. The figures I described in my original post were only for the freshman class. The survey suggests more freshmen are planning to come back as compared to other classes. In this regard, I am worried that the issue raised in this forum about too many sophomores taking gap years may indeed impact those on this WL…
@myrfog Your calc sounds right. “~39 students” who are internationals is about 2%. They disclosed back then about 2% of internationals were without dual citizenship. I think it said 8.6% are dual citizens out of 10.6%. Prob due to the lawsuits, they have yanked out all data points on 2024 internationals by now.
My mom is freaking out after reading this from WaPo.
Again, maybe the ICE thing is a blessing in disguise for some internationals. Pretty sure H with H Med and Yale with YNH Med are the best in the world even at a UHS level. The question is how they prioritize kids with potential COVID or non-COVID problems during a possible sudden outbreak?
WSJ says WH considering the option of dialing back the ban to exclude kids already here with valid visas. Should help Canadians who don’t need visas to come here.
Still hurting incoming freshmen and 1st year grads without visas but at least a step toward the right direction.
(CNN)The Trump administration has rescinded its policy that would bar international students who only take online courses from staying in the US, a federal judge announced Tuesday in Boston.
Breaking News: WH rescinds ban. HAR: 1 GOV: 0
As an international student, that’s great to hear. I’m guessing the Trump administration has realized that now is not a good time for immense backlash.
People act like he thought this up himself. Lol. Someone in the professional staffs within the state department and dhs was tasked with enforcing existing regulations. After the details and people complained he probably or his senior staff got involved and said make it go away.
Or listened to feedback and saw the points being made and changed their minds. That’s a good thing.
A lawsuit from Harvard played exactly zero percent in forcing this change. Except perhaps making it perhaps going to be a moot point if a long term stay was ordered. Lawsuits aren’t really unknown territory for this admin.
I would take it as good news and let it go. No reason to make it a point where they clean up the position with an executive order that may hold up. Pick up the putt as they say in golf.
Anyone hear anything?
Nothing here @Mommabear1
I tend to agree with @privatebanker
Lots of elements in the works here including MA AG Healy leading 18 state AGs to sue.

Think ICE underestimated the push back from nearly 200 schools and 19 AGs. All in all a good outcome to show the world that at least as a country we still love foreign kids. Now lets see how many overseas visa delays or denials might surface. Kids with visas already here should be safe!
Gap app deadline is 7/24. Either we hear next week or the last week of July. Best of luck to everyone!
Does anyone know if the gap year deadline of July 24 is for all years or just incoming freshman?
Nothing here in Canada.
Nothing here in CA
I think even if Harvard doesn’t take any off their waitlist for the class of 2024, they’ll extend offers for the class of 2025 (z-list). Out of curiosity, if any of you got a z-list offer from H would you still choose H or the school you’re currently committed to. For me, it’d be a hard choice and I wouldn’t know what to do.
@waitlistedsenior Personally I think it’s a good deal. I’d feel terrible for the rising seniors who have a more competitive admissions season coming up, but being z-listed feels like just waiting a year to start the typical college experience that it’s supposed to be (or at least closer than it is right now).
@waitlistedsenior Gap year is just for freshmen, I think. Other years are called deferments. Some schools don’t make a distinction at all so the same word means both.
I will never take a z-list offer. Reality is if you are heading to an Ivy+ anyway, especially a HYPS school, no one at that level really cares whether it’s Harvard or not. My uncles (both hired kids from HYPS and Ivy+) say when they are hiring people in the real world, a HYPS degree kid will always get interviewed but scrutinized harsher than a regular Ivy+ or big elite state school guy. At the grad school level, we are seeing more and more internationals and adults without Ivy+ degrees compared to 20+ years ago. I guess diversity means stop accepting people who look or talk too similar. I digress. In a nutshell, won’t waste another year and miss the economic boom which should be welcoming us in 2024. Timing is everything in life, a lot more important than H or not.
I doubt there will be much use of the z-list this year, since there are already numerous students electing to take gap years. Using the z-list will make admissions rather difficult for next year.
I agree @technoblade. Why on earth would there be a Z list this year when next year enrollment will be impacted by gap year students and sophomores who deferred? I will be surprised any more students will be offered a waitlist spot of any kind at this point.
