I'll probably receive some bad comments for this question, however, I was wondering if someone could expand a little on the arts supplement instructions. The instructions read, "Music Recordings
Please note that CD format is preferred but that tapes will be evaluated.
Please only submit recordings of solo pieces (vocal pieces with accompaniment are permissible).
Do not send video or DVD recordings of musical performances or recitals.
Please place all CDs in a standard 5.5" by 5"-size soft protective sleeve to protect your item during mailing. Label both the case and the CD itself with your legal name, date of birth and high school."

Does that mean that if I play the clarinet, I cannot submit a recording with accompaniment?

Harvard Admissions does not want to be influenced by your appearance, which is why they ask that you not send videos or DVD’s.

You could submit an audio tape with accompaniment, but remember, the Admissions Office sends these recordings to the Music Department for review. Professional musicians will be accessing your talent, so having accompaniment will really not allow them to zero in on you specifically. It kind of depends on the "how present’ the accompaniment is, but, it’s up to you in terms of how to best present yourself.

What they don’t want is for you to send a recording of the orchestra in which you are one of several clarinetists. Similarly, they don’t want a singer to send a recording of the choir in which she is one of the second sopranos.

But you may send a recording that *features *you playing clarinet, even if there are other musicians in it, too.

We also asked if they would like a cue for 3 minutes of what my daughter considered her best work, so they didn’t have to listen to the whole thing.

I sent in a separate recording of my concerto and Bach (both unaccompanied) to Harvard while for other schools, I sent in a recording with piano accompaniment. Basically, just submit something that highlights your skill. You can convey this most easily with solo works but you could also send in quartet/quintet recordings that demonstrate your chamber music capabilities.
