Hi I'm new to CC and I was wondering what my chances would be at harvard based on my GPA. I'll be a Junior this fall and my GPA from Freshman and Sophomore Year isn't as great as I would like it to be. I have roughly calculated what my GPA would most likely be by the end of Junior Year: UW: 3.45(ish) and W:4.44 (ish). I know those grades aren't stellar at all. Bs in 4 AP classes kind of killed my GPA for me. I have other factors though other than my GPA that are pretty great.

Standardized Test:
Haven't taken the SAT or ACT yet but I did take the PSAT (sophomore) and got a 223, So I'm sure that next year I can qualify for National Merit and National Achievement Awards (I'm Black--btw).
I've taken 4 AP Classes so far: AP Biology (scored a 2)~Freshman, AP French (4)~Sophomore, AP Human Geography (5)~Sophomore, AP World History (4)~Sophomore

Extracurriculars:
I love to write especially creative writing. I'm working on writing a book that I hope to get published this year.
I'm on the School Newspaper (Editor)
I took a writing course at a program called Inner Spark~California State Summer School for the Arts.
In a few clubs but most notably the Writing Club at school and Environmental Club
In French Honor Society and English Honor Society.
Hold two leadership positions at French Club (Secretary) and Debate Club (Treasurer)

Volunteering:
150+ Hours at Local Hospital
Planning on volunteering at a Library this school year

Any Feedback would be GREATLY appreciated.

PS: If Harvard is COMPLETELY out of reach for me what other universities should I be looking at.

I would think that Harvard is way out of league for you (doesn’t mean you shouldn’t apply).

Colleges like Harvard want students who take the most rigorous courses available and succeed. Only 1 5, 4’s, and a 2 aren’t impressive (even if you took bio ap as a freshman). The average harvard applicant generally gets only 4+ on all APs, 2300+ in SAT, and plenty of ECs.

I don’t want to be mean or anything, but your ECs are weak enough to the point that I highly doubt Harvard would even consider you. I mean they are decent for a state college but nothing that will impress Harvard. Generally ECs of Ivy-bound students include high-end awards, member of the school-board, regional/national leader/winner, etc.) I see potential based on your PSAT though. I’m not saying it’s not possible, I’m just saying it’s highly unlikely to magically build up ECs in one year. EC’s of Ivy students usually take a couple years (like Eagle scout, research projects over the course of multiple years, volunteer projects over course of many years, etc.). It’d take a lot to pull off all the ECs you’d need for harvard just to be considered (especially since I’m guessing you’ll have a set of tough classes).

To be frank, I wouldn’t consider it, but who knows.

Odds are, you won’t get into HArvard. But then, those are the odds for everyone.

No one on here will guarantee you a spot. We just don’t know. Everyone on here will tell you that odds are very, very slim. Just prepare yourself for rejection, but be happy if you get in.
