Harvard Extension School and Sports Teams

Hello everyone!

I was interested to know whether Harvard Extension School students were permitted to join any of the sports teams at Harvard University, like the Men's Heavyweight or Lightweight Crew?

Thanks.

Varsity sports at Harvard College are ruled by the NCAA guidelines. Students of Harvard College undergo a months long process by the NCAA to gain eligibility (grades, courses, and amateur status must be approved). The only non-College students who can compete on undergraduate varsity teams are the very few grad students who had previous undergrad NCAA eligibility and for some reason (usually injury) had a year left of eligibility.

So, no, Extension School students cannot play on varsity teams, but may join some campus club teams that play recreational level sports…

The polymathic students at the Extension School are actually able to attend Harvard College with special student status. Wouldn’t that allow an undergraduate to gain equal-eligibility as they are permitted to take courses within the actual college?

No.

@kh: the NCAA sets the rules on eligibility. What then is to stop some unscrupulous college from getting some ringer into their adult-education courses and putting her/him onto a team? The rules exist to address real issues.

^^ Even students who are admitted to Harvard College as an academic applicant and attempt to walk-on to a Harvard team must complete and follow NCAA Eligibility rules: http://web1.ncaa.org/ECWR2/NCAA_EMS/NCAA.jsp
