Harvard Fac Brat?

Is it actually true that faculty kids are more likely to be accepted to Harvard? Does anyone know stats?

Yes, it is true. However, unlike at some other universities, the kids do not get a tuition discount.

Other than “higher than average?” The admissions office, I assume; but they won’t tell you.

I don’t know specifically about Harvard, but I think way, way higher than average. Short of being a Nobel Prize or Oscar winner, or maybe a McDonald’s All-American with a 4.0 GPA and 1500+ SATs, it’s about the most powerful hook there is at most universities. My impression is that qualified children of tenured faculty members are admitted if they apply. There aren’t that many of them in any particular year.

A friend was recruited from a rival university to chair a department at his single-initial alma mater. Neither of his first two children had been admitted as legacy applicants. Admission for his youngest child was explicitly one of the benefits offered if he took the job. It worked.
