Harvard for intl' student with low sat scores but great background ?

Hi,

I really want to get to Harvard (Class of 2016) but I don't think my SAT will be over 1900

If I get that score and take all the subjects do you think I have a chance ?
SAT I : around 1900
4 Test Subject : MATH I & II, French, Modern Hebrew

I was born in Paris and used to live there until I was 13. Then we moved to Israel and I finished high school with very high scores avg : 93/100. (including maths, computer, economy, english, french,...)
After high school, I went to an International school of English in Boston for 2 months where I improved my english.
At 18 I went to the Combat Intelligence Unit of the Israel Army and and after 8 months only went to the Commander course (leadership, responsibility,...) . I was the commander of 6 soldiers in a post of one of the Israeli border for a year and then I went to be the commander of young recruits soldiers for 8 months (basic and advanced training).
I speak french and hebrew fluently, my english is not bad due to my time in Boston but not good enough to get 700+ at the english parts of the SAT.

And I'm dreaming of HARVARD. What do you think ?
Are there any differences if I apply as French or as an Israeli ?
PS : I'll be 21 at Sept 2012.

Thank you

Hey israrub,

I think you have a good shot at Harvard. Because you didn’t grow up in English speaking countries, they will not be expecting you to have 800’s on the reading section of the SAT, you will be applying as an international so they will not be comparing you to American students. In addition, Harvard likes people with interesting backgrounds and from what you wrote, you have a very interesting background. You have a good GPA and good leadership skills, I am not sure what differences there are whether you apply as a French international or an Israeli international. If you can express your uniqueness in your essays and show a clear focus for why you want to go to Harvard (what educational opporunities would Harvard provide for you that other schools wouldn’t), I think you have a very good chance.

Best of luck to you!

Thank you eak325

What do you think about what I said about the SATs ?
If I get around 600 at the English parts, do I still have a chance ?
I’m looking at the forums and I see that a lot of Asian fellows get 700+.

Are you in MIT ? At their website they ask to take Chemistry or Physics or Biology test subjects. Is there a way to get in without taking those tests ? Because I didn’t do any of that after 10th grade so my level in those subjects is very low and I’m very interested by computer, so MIT is a great choice for me.

i don’t think you have a great shot with that SAT score. academic abilities are the first consideration and your english skills will raise concerns, but I am not sure how good your high school record is since I don’t know about the context.

Thank you for the honest answer.

So you say that I really need to get high scores at SATs.

For the subjects it’s ok to do Math I, Math II, French and Modern Hebrew ?

Don’t do both Math 1 and 2. Schools consider that redundant. I would imagine the kind of schools you are considering would prefer the Math 2.

Where else might you apply?

Ivies. Columbia and Yale are my favorites after Harvard.

Like I said, before I went to the army, I spent 2 months completely alone in Boston and I made some friends. I won’t tell you the whole story, but a friend arranged me a place to sleep in Harvard. I spend the night of the Harvard-Yale Game of 2008 at the Adam’s house dorms and went to the game the next day. That’s the weekend I fall in love with Harvard.

Israrub, you are reaching very high. Are you saying that if you don’t get into an Ivy or MIT, then you don’t want to go to college in the US at all?

If you want to come to school here, please apply to a better range of schools to avoid disappointment. The places you are applying to have about an 8% acceptance rate. It is not likely that you’ll be accepted.

So I guess I’ll do the best I can at the SATs and try.

schmohawk, there is no point for me to study in a non-Ivies college. I have no family and no relatives in the US, and I won’t go 8000 miles away and leave all the people and things I know to study at a “middle class” college.
The universities in Israel are more than fine, but after 13 years in France and 9 in Israel, few years in the US at an Ivies sounds me perfect. Maybe too much… The time will tell us.

Just because it isn’t an ivy doesn’t mean it’s “middle class”. There are several EXCELLENT schools in the states that aren’t ivies.

University of Chicago
Emory
Vanderbilt
Northwestern
Duke
Washington University (St. Louis)
Rice
and plenty more…

Then your plan makes total sense! I know that Israel has wonderful universities. Mazel Tov to you. I wish you the best.

Thank you hoping to open an other thread in a year from now to explain how I got accepted into Harvard…

Hey israrub,

If you could manage around a 700 I would say that’d be just fine. A score in the 600’s would be okay, but I don’t know how much it would affect your chance at acceptance.
I was accepted to MIT early action (I took chem and math 2 sat 2’s).
I would definitely say to take one of the science SAT 2’s inaddition to math 2 (if only for application purposes).

But ivy league schools really are random with some of their admissions. It couldn’t hurt to add schools like University of Chicago or Johns Hopkins (which would both be great if you are interested in computer science).

You’ll need atleast a 2200 to have a chance at Harvard.
