Harvard international students?

Hello all,

Any idea what to put for this?

What specific plan do you have, if any, for using the education you hope to receive?
50 words max

Here’s a clue: To study in the United States, International students must obtain a visa which is valid for five years. You may only stay in the US as long as you are a full time student and must return to your home country after the completion of your studies.

So, what do you plan on doing in your home country with the education you will have received from Harvard? For example, if you plan on studying economics, what will you do with that degree to help the economy of your country grow and prosper? What altruistic things do you want to accomplish with your degree from Harvard?

I’m a dual US citizen, so I can stay there as long as I want. which approach should I take then?

Then you (thankfully) don’t have to apply as an international student – they face the worst chances.

As a dual US citizen you SHOULD be applying as a US applicant and NOT as an international student. As such, US citizens do not have to answer that question.

If you are attending a high school outside of the United States, then answer the question as if you will be entering the US job market. What altruistic things do you want to accomplish in the US with your degree from Harvard?

They do however say
“FOR STUDENTS APPLYING FROM SCHOOLS OUTSIDE THE US AND CANADA”

Since I dont go to a school there I believe I still have to do that question.

How can I apply as a US citizen and not an international? I said I was a dual US citizen in the common app

^^ US Dual Citizens are automatically grouped separately for statistical purposes, but from an Admissions standpoint you will be applying as a US national and not an international student. For example, this from the class of 2019: http://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2015/04/harvard-college-admits-1990/

I actually have 3 citizenship, is it still considered dual citizenship?
And as far as I am concerned, just putting im a dual us citizen is enough? Or should I write it in the additional info too?

You should be absolutely honest in everything you submit to a college. If you have 3 citizenships, you should write all 3 down.

Would I still be considered a US citizen?

Yes! Your US citizenship doesn’t fade away merely because you also have citizenship in 1, 2, or 5 other countries.

Just to be clear, the Harvard application, which is the Common App, does not have questions that state “Check here if you are legacy” “Check here if you are URM” "Check here if you are international: “Check here if you are an athletic recruit.”

For these schools, you fill in the questions that are asked on the application, and each college will use that information as it sees fit. In terms of having multiple citizenships, the Common App questions are:

So for the first question, you would select “US Dual Citizen” (even if you have 3+ citizenships), and the other questions are self-explanatory.

As @gibby noted, Harvard would consider you a US citizen, and will use that for any reporting it does. Other colleges might classify you differently for reporting, but will generally still consider you as a US citizen for admissions and FA purposes.
