I'm applying to Harvard and had an interview already. But they contacted me for another interview, which I heard is very rare and generally not a good sign...but reactions have been mixed. I've gotten everything from "That's great! It's a good sign!" to "You must have really bombed your first interview."

Personally, I'm nowhere near the shoo-in type of candidate who gets two interviews because Harvard really likes him/her, but I also felt like my first interview went okay and I got along well with my interviewer. Basically, I'm not so sure it's a good thing, but I also don't think it has to do with the first interview...or does it?

So...any input on what a second interview means? (Maybe it's even a system glitch?)

Are these both alumni interviews? Does Interviewer Two know you’ve talked to Interviewer One?

I can think of three reasons why you’re getting a second interview:

1) Interviewer One either didn’t fill out the report or filed it incorrectly.
2) Interviewer Two really wants to talk to you and write his own letter for you.
3) System glitch.

I would definitely tell Interviewer Two you’ve already had an interview, and see what he says.

Yes, both of the interviews are alumni interviews. Interviewer Two did not mention Interviewer One. It didn’t seem as if she was aware about Interviewer One, but it didn’t necessarily sound like she was unaware…it just wasn’t mentioned.

Yes, after asking around some more I’m inclined to think it was a glitch. I’m letting her know about the previous interview in case.

There are occasions when Harvard does do 2 interviews. As an alum, I’ve been the second interviewer. However, it would be typical for the alumni interviewer to acknowledge that it’s a second interview. Call the admissions office to sort this out.
