The alumnus who is to interview me called this morning to set up an interview and said we will be meeting in his home. He also said not to bring a resume, but mentioned that Harvard does collect ACT, SAT, class rank, and other academic data so I should bring those. Does this seem strange?
This same situation happened to my daughter for an interview from a different university. We thought it was a bit odd so my husband drove her there and introduced himself to the interviewer and did a quick sizing up. D had her cell phone with her and my husband hung out at a nearby coffee shop just in case. It was completely above board. In this case, the interviewer was a busy corporate type who didn’t have a lot of free time and it was easier to have the students come to him.
I was really apprehensive about having an interview in my interviewer’s home (it was my first, and in my country it would be unheard of) but it was actually really nice to have privacy! Much less stressful than the interview where I met the interviewer at her workplace…that was very intimidating
I had my H interview at the interviewer’s house. It was kind of strange. People kept coming in and out of the room, and he introduced me to his daughter (who went to H also). At one point, a random guy (who also happened to go to H) walked into the room and just said high. The interview itself was normal, however. He ended it by saying that although he enjoyed his time with me, the interviews mean next to nothing for H. He told me that since I’m a legacy, it’s more of just a formality and that my mom would have a big influence on my decision (since she interviews for H herself).
Had the same experience during my Harvard interview a few years ago. Not unusual at all. But in my opinion it is not conducive to a comfortable environment. I m interviewing Penn applicants now and we are explicitly told that we cant have the interview in our house, it needs to be a neutral environment, and also that we shouldn’t ask about scores and grades.
Until now, I didn’t get an interview from Harvard. Do you think it’s still time to get an interview from Harvard?
I’ve got the same question. Haven’t received anything from Harvard concerning an interview and I don’t exactly live in the sticks either. Some other people at my school have been contacted but not me.hmmm
Discouraged but not technically against the rules. I agree with the poster who said that the comfort of the student should be most important. If you’re not comfortable say so!
Not all areas have enough alums to cover everyone. In my experience though, of Cambridge wants to know more about you they will shake the trees until a local alum can be found eventually.
