For History or Political Science, is Harvard or Stanford better? I've been accepted to both.

Another factor(s) to consider is that I'm not a fan of greek life, like cities, and want somewhere that is politically active and liberal.

then u may want to go to ‘Hhhhhhhhhaaaaaarvard’
LOL
But seriously Stanford is not in a city, thought SanFran is about 45mins away, and doesn’t have such an activist lifestyle

they’re both good, so visit both then decide. i’d say harvard though

Oh yeah. Stanford is a great school. But Harvard is Harvard!

Stanford is very suburban. The campus is very large and serene and set back from activity. Stanford’s not even technically in Palo Alto, it’s more like next to it and so most students stay on campus most of the time. Stanford’s campus feels very in tune with nature (plenty of trees-it’s an arboretum, plus a lake, rolling foothills, etc) and I think suits the kind of student who likes to spend more time relaxing and sunbathing, playing frisbee, riding his/her bike, etc than the kind of student who generally would like the hustle and bustle of the city on a daily basis. If being in an upbeat, urban environment is important to you, Harvard definitely fits the bill. (That being said though if asthetics mean anything to you, Stanford is GORGEOUS, both architecturally and naturally. Although sandstone and red-tiled roofs aren’t everybody’s cup of tea. Harvard is mostly colonial style and is a bit run down, IMO)

I don’t think Harvard has any greek life (?) and Stanford’s greek life is very small, roughly 10-15% of the student body goes greek. It won’t get in your way at either of the schools. Although since Stanford is rather secluded, frat parties I’ve heard tend to be a common destination on a saturday night, even if you’re not in a frat.

Both schools are very, very liberal. You can’t get more liberal than the Bay Area or Boston. Now of course, when I say liberal, I’m speaking primarily about social liberals. Both Harvard and Stanford will have their fair share of economic/political conservatives. Stanford’s Hoover Institute for example is well known for its very conservative stance on economics, foreign policy and other issues and has served as a stronghold for the Republican Party.

Political science is one of those majors that I feel doesn’t really change much at all from school to school. But nevertheless, it is very strong at both Stanford and Harvard and you’ll get a fabulous education at either. I wouldn’t make this decision based on which school has the better political science program (Be forewarned though, Condoleeza Rice is coming back to teach at Stanford).

Thanks for the input!
Any other views?

From what you’ve put forth to this point, I would say Harvard is a better fit for you. But, just a random question, where are you from? If you want to “get away”, going to another side of the country might factor into the decision… good luck choosing and CONGRATS!

I’ve noticed that with many “vs.” posts, it is easy to tell in the post which school they are leaning for and would rather attend, and that they are simply looking for some affirmation of their beliefs. Now, you didn’t provide enough information about your wants and needs for me to know for sure that Harvard is right for you, but from what few things you stated, it certainly seems like Harvard would be a better fit.

^LOl, this is so true…when I wrote the, “Stanford>UW-Madison Full-Ride” post it was so obvious that I wanted Stanford…

Well… I really don’t have a preference. I like history, cute nerds who know how to have fun-- even if it means going out on a school night, parties, intellectuals, queer kids, and people who can have long nerdy conversations over coffee. Coffee is a must.

^ I think harvard may have students that may be too insular to do a lot of what u mentioned

Harvard!!!

Stanford!!!

Just to cancel out the equally useless single-word post above mine.

But seriously, you sound more like a H girl.

I’d say Harvard, judging from your OP.

Harvard!!!

harvard rocks.
stanford sucks.
end of.

(j/k :))

what can i say? i like supplying the useless one word posts ;)
