I know the portfolio is usually art or music, but I wanted to submit my opening statement from Mock Trial (where I’m heavily involved). Harvard told me I could do that, but I can’t find where I can upload it on the common app–the portfolio links automatically to slideroom, and isn’t that just for art and music? Where can I upload a word document?
Hey OP try posting on the “Ask an Admissions Counselor”. Another option of course now to just email admissions.
For that matter, try posting questions about Harvard somewhere besides the University of Chicago forum.
Crap…sorry, i just clicked start new discussion and i didn’t notice it linked me here.
The Common Application no longer allows student’s to upload documents, as too many AO’s complained that students were submitting unwanted resumes, or maybe it was Mock Trail Opening Statements.
At any rate, Harvard does allow for student’s to upload one (1) document in their supplement, however you might want to reconsider sending Admissions your Opening Statement.
I’m sure your speech was wonderful, but what purpose would it serve? To demonstrate that you can construct an effective and persuasive argument? I’m guessing your teachers covered that area in their recommendation letters, so your Opening Statement is probably going to be duplicative. And depending upon how much your teachers raved about your Mock Trial abilities in the LoR’s, sending in the Opening Statement might even paint you as a one-dimensional applicant…
A better approach would be to take this as an opportunity to tell Admissions something NEW about yourself that they could not glean from the rest of your application or by reading over your list of extracurricular activities and awards.
Best of luck to you, whatever you decide!
