Harvard, Prinecton, Stanford, any shot at all???

Hey there, first and foremost let me say this thread is not for me. I've already done a thread and gotten my chances. I have a friend here who just wants to do a chances post, although chances are that whatever you say wont dissuade him very much from his choices. Anyways, here it goes.

Stats;

African American Male in Seattle Suburbs. Parents from Nigeria.
Tri-lingual in English, Spanish, and a Nigerian dialect.

GPA 3.67 uw, 3.89 w

Schools-
(Brother and Sister at Stanford, another Sister at Harvard)

Harvard
Stanford
Princeton
Duke
University of Washington
Johns Hopkins
UNC-Chapel Hill
Georgetown

So all that's needed here are just some chances of acceptance. Thanks...

those are fantasy schools...i think georgetown should be the BEGINNING of your reach schools...and even thats a MAJOR reach...unless you truely have soemthing outstanding about you that you can prove to these schools

As a URM, he is in the pool. HPS are reaches, but still possible. The other schools are more likely. Without URM status, half of the list would be out of reach completely.

oh i didnt read that part...i guess your right...but i dont understand why anyone would wanna go to a college if the only reason they are getting in is minority status...if you arent good enough to get in yourself...you probably wont be all too successful at this school and in the long run no one will give a **** about weather you are a minority or not....
(this doesnt apply if you are actually severely underpreviledged or had some factor affecting your performance) but then again that could happen to anything NOT just minorities

3.67 and a 1950, what makes you think you deserve to go to harvard?

what makes you kids think you know everything about college admissions?

to Uvajoe, that's harsh.... I understand that he may not get into Harvard, and you have all the right in the world to state that, but don't be a jerk about it.

These schools aren't the only schools he's appyling to, he just wanted to know what others thought about his shot.

Well.. if his siblings go to Harvard and Stanford.. then it's worth a shot.. Good luck

The list is OK. I think he is an average applicant at most of them, maybe slightly below for the very competitive colleges. I would add a few more match schools that are more like Georgetown in terms of difficulty. Tufts and Emory could be good choices.

Harvard/Princeton: 5%
Stanford: 10%
Duke: 20%
Washington: close to 100% (in-state)
JHU: 30%
UNC: 30% (out-of-state)
Georgetown: 50-60%

I don't think P and H are very likely ... the others are possible but, with the exception of U of Washington, hard to predict because of their competitiveness.

I think that your friend might like to add an LAC or two with a reasonable admissions rate - say, Colby or Macalester - so that he is more sure of having options come spring.

Are you kidding me? University of Washington is a reach for him. His SAT scores are abysmal, his unweighted GPA would place him in the bottom .5% of a class at Harvard, where almost everyone has at least a 3.8 UW.

This is an excellent example of when black people feel like they deserve to get into a good school. Not people they are smart. Not because they excelled in school. Not because they have good ECs. But because they are black. And that is what is very very sad. They are exploiting their race. Black people might make a claim they are repressed in our society, but judging by this example, if someone with a 3.6 GPA thinks they have a shot at Harvard solely because they are black, they actually have HUGE advantages.

hey desertman, you're a huge ****ing douchebag and i hope the adcoms realize it.

love matt

oh and since you are obviously a bigot, please read up on Affirmative Action right here. Your chances are not being hurt at all because of AA.

http://www.princeton.edu/main/news/archive/S11/80/77I23/index.xml

some ppl are being hatas...i say you have a great shot dude. your sats might be lower than a lot of applicants, but you also show a lot more character development than some nerd who spends all day posting on college confidential (hint:uvajoe). the sports and rigorous courses help you - the gpa is lower than you'd like, but you could do it. If your parents didn't go to college in the US, it would definitely ALSO help your chances too. play up your trilinguality if you can.

Matt-

You are the one discriminating against me. You are blinded by your own beliefs. You are misguided on AA as well. It does in fact help Asians- at schools like Amherst, Williams, etc. Because nearly all Asians apply to HYPs, then this concentration means that yes, it does hurt them there. But overall, they can certainly benefit from it.

Again, I strong support minority applicants. I know someone at Yale who is a black male. Only thing is, he definitely deserved it. He had a 3.85 GPA, SAT scores averaging over 750, and good ECs. The only thing I reject is when people thing they can get into good schools SOLEY FOR THEIR RACE. If they have another "hook" or are qualified in other categories, they deserve to get in. Now quit your name-calling and flaming or I will be forced to report you.

whoa there. someone's got a stick up his butt
relaaaaaaax

do it
report me.
now read this.
"Removing consideration of race would have little effect on white students, the report concludes, as their acceptance rate would rise by merely 0.5 percentage points. Espenshade noted that when one group loses ground, another has to gain -- in this case it would be Asian applicants. Asian students would fill nearly four out of every five places in the admitted class not taken by African-American and Hispanic students, with an acceptance rate rising from nearly 18 percent to more than 23 percent. Typically, many more Asian students apply to elite schools than other underrepresented minorities. The study also found that although athletes and legacy applicants are predominantly white, their numbers are so small that their admissions do little to displace minority applicants.

The authors based their work on models previously developed in a 2004 study where they looked at more than 124,000 elite university applicants' SAT scores, race, sex, citizenship, athletic ability and legacy in combination with their admission decision."

k thanks

Guys, just relax. We're all stressed at this time.

To the OP (or his/her friend), go for it. What can hurt by trying? You'll (or he'll or she'll) never get in if you (he/she - this is annoying, from now on, you know what I mean) doesn't apply!

Go ahead and good luck!

So I just wanted to say that Desertman, you and Uvajoe are jerks. There is no other way to put it. My friend doesn't think that he deserves to go to HPS, especially not because he is black, he just wanted some opinions since he is applying. So the next time you start talking smack before getting the facts straight, think twice.

Since when is the truth "smack"? Anyway...

Matt-

Also, what that suppose study you are talking about isn't talking into account is that Asians aren't recruited athletes or legacies, typically. They base it on pure academics, which if AA was removed, wouldn't be the sole factor left.

Secondly; "...get into a good school. Not people they are smart. Not because... "

NOT PEOPLE THEY ARE SMART????

desertman; THAT'S NOT EVEN CORRECT ENGLISH. You thought your chances were hurt because of AA, dude your chances are shot becuase you don't even know english.

And how do you figure he has not shot at the UW, the average GPA is 3.67 UW and SAT's are 1200. He's in-state, and has amazing ec's. Good job man.
