Harvard RD applicant discussion 2024

Is there a difference if an alumni interviews you versus if an/your admissions officer interviews you?

saw that some got alumni and others got admissions? Has anyone not received an interview?

Did you get one?

@hehehaha My son hasn’t gotten one. At least, not yet.

@hehehaha we haven’t gotten one, and at this point we think we are not getting one. I mentally checked out as “rejected” school. Either my kid is rejected already or because she has a comprehensive SlideRoom art portfolio (science major). My daughter has high stats that puts her in 75%, 2 subject tests (790 & 780) and very unique EC and leadership.

@mavian @OverseasFather are you international?

@masha1215 Just wondering if anyone has gotten an Admission Officer interview and what that means? A friend got an Admission Officer interview and another friend got alumni. They are from the same state and region…I live in New Hampshire and I received alumni.

Nope, major US city where Alumni association is active and their website looks like they have group interviews planned.

Yes.

I also did not receive na alumni interview, but was contacted by my regional AO for an interview. Not sure what this means! Would anyone care to chime in on the significance of an AO interview?

For what it’s worth, neither my son nor any of his classmates who applied received interviews. We live in a medium size city with a major research university and his small HS program is very competitive (half his class are NMF and a fourth are Presidential Scholar candidates) and has sent 5 or 6 students to Harvard over the last 3 years. I don’t know why but something is definitely different with this admissions cycle.

@hockey731 I think it’s a good sign! I applied EA and got an admissions officer interview and I was accepted EA. The AO was from the docket that took care of my region. My friend who was deferred EA recently got an AO interview as well. He got likelies from Columbia and Yale, so I think Harvard is seriously considering him too. But an AO interview is definitely a good sign. Some of my classmates in the Harvard EA Accepted Students groupchat also got AO interviews. If the AO is reading for your region it matters much more than if the AO is reading for another region.

@dli724144 how long was your interview (especially the part talking about yourself)? How long was the question part?

@hehehaha
Yea, so the interview was around an hour. We talked mostly about my cultural identity, my summer service project that aided migrant children entering the US, and also some of my extracurriculars. There was also some talk about potential majors, Harvard culture, etc. I asked the AO a lot of questions. He was really nice and responsive to everything. It was chill, and I felt really at ease.

@hockey731 To clarify, I think this mostly applies to domestic applicants. I’m not sure how it factors into international applicants.

@dli724144 I’m domestic from an area very close to Harvard. Also, I applied EA and was deferred with no interview (alum or AO), and I had not received an interview until my AO reached out. Does this make a difference?

@hockey731 I mean I can’t say anything is definite, but that seems like a good sign. The AO is for your docket, right? Both my interview and my friend’s interview was from an AO assigned to our region in their docket committee thingy. I think the AO interview is so that the AO can have a better idea about who you are as a person and have an interview box checked so that the AO can advocate for you better in the full committee meeting.

@dli724144 So your interview was about an hour? How do you know if the person is your admissions counselor or some other admissions counselor?

@hehehaha The AO told me that he read for my region, so I know the geographical areas specific to my docket lol… It was a weird grouping but it made some sense. Unless the AO tells you, idk how you would know for sure that the AO reads for your docket. And yea my interview was about an hour, but it went really in depth. The AO asked some personal questions.
