Harvard rescinds admissions offers to 12 students for offensive, tasteless material on FB Group.

The ‘memes’ were posted on the Official Class of 2021 Facebook group.

To add my two cents in, I’m glad I’m not one of them. On the other hand, maybe they got a kick out of it. Who knows

From the headline of that thread:

Well, then it must be true. After all, it was posted on Reddit. Even if there is truth to this, it certainly had no impact on filling the class, wince Harvard did not need to go to the waitlist.

Well for what’s it worth, it’s pretty common knowledge among most Harvard admits this year. I would post screenshots that have been circulating but I don’t think its appropriate or relevant for this website.

I think explaining what is considered 'offensive ’ could be useful to this site’s readers at least.

Every year it just shows that even Harvard can’t get the admissions right. Tough to really know someone from an application.

As I said, not saying it is not true. Also, FWIW, aside from the odd “Somebody posted on Reddit…” nobody is talking about it on the Harvard campus, which seems odd.

I’ve seen the offensive posts described in places other than the Reddit thread in the Applying to College forum. Mostly screen captures of posts on admitted student groups for other colleges. I think the Reddit thread may be the only publicly searchable report.

I was wondering how long it would take for a thread to show up here. It was mentioned here in the Harvard waitlist thread.

FWIW: One of the students involved private messaged me asking if I thought there was a chance s/he would be rescinded. My reply is below

Since then, I’ve heard nothing from the student.

Approximately 4 years ago a boy at my kids HS got into Harvard and Stanford. He did something stupid on his FB page. From what I heard it had to do with sexual harassment. He had worked very hard during HS to get the admissions. His admissions to Harvard and Stanford got rescinded. He wound up going to Berkeley

Seems to be enough anecdotal information here that there is some truth to this story.
