Harvard ROTC

I heard that, with the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell, Harvard will be reinstating ROTC on campus. I am a rising senior in high school (entering college in Fall 2012) who would like to serve in the military as an officer upon graduation from college, and I am considering applying to Harvard.

Does anyone know if Harvard has appointed an ROTC officer whom I could contact about enrollment in ROTC, should I gain acceptance to the college? If not yet, then when/where could I find this information?

Thank you.

I would suggest contacting the MIT Navy ROTC group- they have sponsored the Harvard ROTC students for many years. Now, the Harvard ROTC students are “official”. However, the program will most likely continue to be jointly administered as there are not too many H participants.

If you google MIT Naval ROTC, the officers are listed there. Good luck with your applications.

ROTC obviously does not boost an app, right? At Harvard, it seems like it might be the opposite, with all the liberal (often wealthy liberal) views. The Harvard ROTC vid on Yotuube has more dislikes than likes, and it hardly has a few hundred views.

fauve: Thanks, I’ll do just that.

GordonTheGekko: I’m not interested in it as a boost to my app. My top choices are actually West Point and the Naval Academy; I’m just looking at some other top schools’ ROTC programs in case I don’t get into one of the service academies.

GordonTG- There are plenty of Republicans and Libertarians in the economics and gov departments. The Republican Club is also active and growing.

There is growing respect for ROTC students as it is acknowledged as a sacrifice to head toward the military as opposed to banking or finance. Don’t assume all ROTC people are right wing- there are plenty of patriotic Dems, and some are in Ivy ROTC programs.

For Harvard Business School, military service seems to be seen as a plus because of the leadership, responsibility and maturity of vets.

snicker, good luck on the academies. I know Colorado Springs reduced their class size from 1600 to 1100, and this year 1100 to 1000 - maybe the others did too. The acceptance rate for HS seniors is in the 4% range. Just please don’t tell Harvard that you’re applying there as a safety, as true as it is :).
