Harvard senior charged with fabricating life history, stealing grant money

I agree with you MD Mom. I used to teach college, and any student whom I caught cheating or plagiarizing got an automatic F for the course. I think that too many teachers/profs give second chances not realizing that the cheater probably has gotten away with cheating many times.

I bet the young man who’s the focus of this thread also cheated his way through high school and into Bowdoin.

Well, I think that many of applicants do exaggerate their resumee to get into a college. (That’s what a Princeton interviewer half-jokingly told me to say that I should not feel bad about bragging in an interview.) But lying and forging documents are off the line and this student should be punished for it. Period…

Agreed, it is wrong to cheat and the young man should be punished accordingly.

Let’s also remember that cheating is wrong always – even in places and in circumstances for which we have no particularly high regard – not only in the sacrosanct world of higher education, for which most contributors on this forum, if not all, show a strong devotion.

I think the intensity of the college admissions process is to blame for this man’s egregious act of ludicrousness! If it were not for the severity of the admissions process, he would not have done this act. BTW I am a valedictorian so I am a reliable source of info

feinyNY IS a valedictorian, we should probably listen to him… or is he?

More of “the devil made me do it” mentality.

no his personality disorder/lack of morals is-most kids don’t resort to this and the pressure is on them as well; there have always been cheaters-people who cheat on their taxes;people who cheat on their spouses; politicans who lie about their resumes. People who expect something for nothing. He sure was clever, though. How did he ever get away with this?

<<how did=“” he=“” ever=“” get=“” away=“” with=“” this?=“”>></how>

Well, uhh, you know, his dad worked for the CIA for about 20 years and became Executive Director of Intelligence.

Wheeler accepted to Stanford?

[Adam Wheeler Man Accused Of Duping Harvard Got Into Stanford - wbztv.com](CBS Boston - Breaking News, Sports, Weather, I-Team Investigations)

I wonder if he’s a CC’er haha.

From the article Hurtlocker linked:

"WOBURN (AP) ―
Prosecutors say a Delaware man charged with faking his way into Harvard was accepted at Stanford University in California after he was kicked out of the Massachusetts Ivy League school.

Court documents filed Wednesday in the case of Adam Wheeler said that after his expulsion from Harvard last fall he applied, and was accepted, to Stanford for the 2010-2011 school year. "

From now on, when a CCer asks, “What would happen if I lie?” I’ll try to remember to answer, “You could go to jail.”

I am sure he is neither the first one, nor the last one now @ Harvard. Yeah… he would have graduate on time if he didn’t ask for the Rodohe Scholarship.

"Adam B. Wheeler, who was expelled from Harvard University after allegedly fabricating his academic history, was admitted to Stanford University and a Williams College program by professing to be a Harvard student seeking to transfer, according to court records and officials.

Wheeler, 23, of Milton, Del., was indicted last month on charges of larceny and identity fraud, accused of weaving a web of lies to con his way into Harvard. He pleaded not guilty to the charges and is being held in lieu of $5,000 bail.

Prosecutors say he received more than $45,000 in grants, scholarships, and financial aid based on lies.

Revelations about Wheeler’s successful applications to Stanford and a maritime program run by Williams at Mystic Seaport in Connecticut were contained in papers prosecutors filed in court yesterday."

The Crimson is also carrying the story, as is the IvyGateBlog. It turnes out he also applied to Williams College. So, so far, Yale is the only college that caught on during the application process. You really do wonder how he could get away with such blatant lying.

What field of study was he pursuing?

Also, I don’t quite understand… was he a Harvard grad student who spent some time at Bowdoin but never graduated? And what was he applying for at Yale, Stanford, Williams? More grad, or just a transfer? Why would he want to transfer away from Harvard grad?

This is what I think: Started at Bowdoin (caught cheating there and shown the door), somehow got into Harvard, applying for graduate school scholarships (perhaps Rhodes? as a Harvard student). The scholarship apps were found to be embellished.

so Yale, Stanford, and Williams were his grad-school choices, not undergrad transfer options?

also, how’d he get to Harvard “from MIT”? I thought they didn’t accept transfers

hahahaha well, after reading the article, all i can say is that he’s totally ready and prepared for today’s world. Harvard chose well… i mean, it’s wrong on sooo many levels, but he decieved HARVARD… idk why the CIA doesn’t recruit him and drop all charges…

That’s exactly what I was thinking. This guy is going to disappear off the face of the earth. He definitely got out of control toward the end - don’t get me wrong - but the guy is talented. You’ve gotta give him that.

haha a guy who was smart enough to forge getting into Harvard isnt smart enough to avoid getting caught.
