Hey Everyone!
I've read through many of the threads for Harvard, but I have yet to see a thread on social life.. so I'm going to start one. Has anyone heard anything about the social life at Harvard? What a typical weekend is like for Harvard students? I toured the University and received very mixed messages from two different tour guides. One said "social lives" don't exist and the other skirted the question... Any ideas? Do Harvard kids party often? Does anyone have any time to go out on the weekends for non-academic activities? I've heard the workload at Harvard can be very overwhelming at times!
Any info/comments help! :)

A tour guide told you there is no social life on Harvard? Interesting.

But I can assume that while there is probably a lot bigger emphasis on academics and ECs, there will still be a good amount of people throwing down on the weekend. And should that fail, there is always city life and BU people to party with.

If you want it, it’s there in a big way.

A quick search of “social life” on the Harvard Crimson website brings up 10 pages of articles from the past 60 years. Here in no particular order are some of them:

As with so many other things at Harvard, your social life is what you want it to be.

Back in the day, on any given Saturday night on campus there would be a handful of student plays and at least one concert taking place. Odds were there would be movies showing in every house.

“Parties” ran the gamut from small groups drinking scotch in their rooms to raves, keg parties and progressives. On-campus parties generally had the reputation of being pretty lame, though. For good large parties, one went not to BU, but to MIT.

Many people would go out to bars and restaurants in the Square and in Cambridge generally. Downtown Boston is only a 10-15 minute ride on the T, so we also would go to the North End or Chinatown for dinner.

Some people hide in labs on Saturday nights, too.

There always will be a wide variety of choices, regardless of your social preferences.
