Harvard Summer school and SSP

I was poking around the harvard summer school website one day and i noticed something.
there is the regular harvard summer school which is open enrollment and then there's the harvard ssp which requires an application.

What's the difference between the two? Do SSP and Summer school students take the same courses? What's the advantage of SSP over the regular summer school?

Harvard SSP? The abbreviation SSP usually refers to this. Are we thinking of the same SSP here?

SSP here stands for summer secondary school. very different.

I had the idea that SSP is a part of Harvard Summer School, meant for High School and grade 9 students.

"Experience college this summer in Harvard’s Secondary School Program (SSP). " “Experience college if you will graduate from high school in 2010, 2011, or 2012” (from the website.)

That said, you can also find other programs of Harvard Summer School at http://www.summer.harvard.edu/2010/programs/</a> ==> which is why I hazarded my guess as above.

Correct me if I’m wrong. That’s what I perceived.

I have no idea about the differences. Perhaps more would deem Harvard’s SSP to be more prestigious. But seeing from the cost, (~$10000) It certainly doesn’t seem very affordable to most low-income families without financial aid.

Would you be applying?

i would if there was an advantage to be in harvard ssp over the open-enrollment summer school. i mean, why would i bother to fill out the application otherwise? especially since i live 20 minutes away from harvard

I think you should read these two:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/harvard-2012/531545-harvard-ssp-summer-school.html</a></p>

If you have the time and money to throw away, I say why not. But seeing as ^ they say, I think it’d be wise not to unless you can excel in the studies there.

thx, i suppose i might as well apply. i won’t have to pay for room and board so it’s pretty cheap for my family’s standards.

As far as I understand, the open courses are for non-high school students. The SSP is specifically for grade 10, 11, and 12 students wishing for college credit.

Kind of an off note–I’m also applying to the program and I’m a sophomore. They ask for your PSAT and SAT scores. I have taken both, and plan to retake the SAT in May. What do you think would be a safe SAT/PSAT score for admissions? Do they even factor in your SAT/PSAT score that much as a sophomore?

To answer your question, Boardinggoaler, I’m a sophomore who just got accepted into the program and I didn’t submit a PSAT score. I think the SAT/PSAT is more important for juniors and seniors. The questions on the App and the essay are pretty important though.

Yes the program is designed for 10, 11, and 12 graders, although from what I understand, there will be older students in the classes as well.

Harvard’s SSP is basically an if you can pay, you can go - type of program. Most talk about SSP on CC refers to Summer Science Program, a far more prestigious summer program imo.

Hello,

How do the college prep workshops work at Harvard SSP ? How often are they ?
I’m really interested in Astronomy, how’s the observatory at Harvard ?

Thank you

I took courses with students from MIT (no summer session) and graduate students.

It had 3 MIT Students, 5 or so grad students, 12-16 undergrad students (mostly Harvard) and 7 high school students.

There are classes that are entirely or predominantly taken by high school students (Calc 2 or Multi), but I wanted to take one that would be more of a challenge.

It may not be as prestigious as other places, but if you want to get the feel of an undergraduate experience, with all of the rigor, go for it.

Last summer Harvard Summer School and the Secondary School Program (SSP) were used interchangeably.

So, If I were you I would look at their courses, pick the most difficult one in the field you are interested in. Whether it is programming, O-chem, or the arts.

I got financial aid for about 70% of the costs as well.

I sent in most of my app and I was wondering what type of sample essay I should send in? Does it really matter the grade you get on it? I would appreciate anything else that you can think of that i should do or that would increase my chances of getting in.

BEST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE. Probably the only reason why I made into an Ivy League (my professor gave me a great letter). I learnt how to study, how to approach professors and how to manage my life. It was a little bit of a shock because I was young and from a different country with a different language, but i needed it. I would have never grown up and learnt what it means to have a goal and achieve it. After that everything seems possible. Harvard gave me a really hard time but is forever in my heart.

ps all the people I knew from there made it to top places, so don’t worry. It’s totally worth it as long as you take it seriously enough.
