Hi, I am applying to Harvard regular decision and would like to submit the optional supplement as well. One concern for my application is that I will have too much science on the application. I have done astronomical research, received great recommendations from my research mentors, and will be submitting my research paper via mail. I am also the president of the science club and participate in SciOly…etc. As proud I am with these accomplishments, I do not want to overwhelm admissions officers. I have many other interests and activities and therefor want to focus my essays on those so they can see the whole of me instead of my science side. For my regular commonapp essay I wrote about my struggles while painting a commission. All that is left is my supplement essay and I want it to really showcase my personality.
One topic I loved was the idea of writing to a roommate. It would allow me to really write about all the things I like and do. My concern is that it will sound like I am writing to impress the college. Also, this is a topic on the suggested list.
So my questions:
Is it better or worse to write from one of their suggested prompts? Should I try to write from my own topic?
Is the “Writing to Roomate” a good option for an essay?
This is for Harvard, would they appreciate an essay with a humorous touch? I was considering the Roomate topic and I thought it would be funny to include little bits such as “And do not worry if there is a flood in the dorms, as I am an experienced lifeguard. I will always make sure to save any essay or notes of yours out of waters way”.
I know this is cheesy, but if organized and written well I am wondering if possible humor is the way to go.
Thank you so much!!!
