Harvard Supplement HELP

Well, the deadline is near and yes, I've been a little lazy in the beginning of December.

Anyways, for the supplement essay, would it be too trite to write about my passion in biology and why I have that interest? Should I write about something more unique and creative?

Thanks and hopefully I get a quick reply!

OP:
Yes you can write about that. And if you are a good writer, you can make a great essay out of it.

AnnaTheGreat,

Do you go to Harvard? If so, may I ask some questions? :)

Not yet, I will go next year.

Ohh, so you were admitted EA?

Yes, you can pm me or ask your questions here if you want.

Well, first of all, congratulations haha

My first question would be what do you think is the best essay for Harvard?
Should I focus more on showing interest in the school or showing who I am? Maybe neither, since so many applicants do that?

Also, do you think narrative writing is the best way to write a college admissions essay?

Ive written my essays already but I’m worried, because I think mine aren’t good enough…

Thanks!

There is no “best essay” for Harvard. 2000 students are accepted to Harvard every year and I’m sure their essays are very different from one another.
You don’t really need to show interest since almost everyone has an interest in Harvard but they wouldn’t want to admit someone who clearly prefers a different environment either. I’d say you’d better let your personality show through your essays. And that you shouldn’t TRY to write something quirky and creative by forcing it. Write about something you’re passionate about. Something you can talk about for hours. Forcing an essay isn’t a good idea imho.

I don’t know if narrative writing is the best. I think plenty of students can pull off different writing styles but I wouldn’t try to change my writing style just because I assumed they would like it. I once asked someone about my essay and he told me it wasn’t good enough for HARVARD because I didn’t use enough metaphors or literary techniques and such. People think everyone who gets into Harvard should write like a Shakespeare wannabe but it’s simply not true. If you like the poetic style, go for it. If you prefer writing literally, like me, it’s perfectly fine. Oh and the subject of your essay doesn’t really have to be unique. Some people screw up unique subjects and some people write amazing essays with cliche subjects. It’s up to you to make your essays glow.

Wow, thanks really!!!

You’ve just given me so much confidence lol
Thank you for your great advice.

I guess I’ll stick with my essays and just revise them a little to make them more personal.

Also, only if your fine with it, may I read your essays?

I want to know how I can effectively show, not tell.

Thanks.

You’re welcome. I can give you my extracurricular essay. I will pm you.

Thanks again.

I appreciate it a lot :)

Between CC and the facebook group we have where people are asking for help for their friends, I wonder how many people we (the 2018 EA admits) will help actually get in :)
