Yes. Whether it’s enough is a big unknown. Good luck.
@skieurope What do you think are the test score thresholds for unhooked applicants?
I would not even hazard a guess. It’s a wonderful parlor game, but at the end of the day, Harvard really does evaluate applications holistically, IMO. There is no magic formula, unfortunately.
Would you consider being in a different HS for 9th, 10th and 11th grade a “hook?” They were all in the same region, just separate towns. @skieurope
No. I’m a purist, so to me a hook is: you were either born with insane athletic ability/as a URM/into a family that has legacy and/or donates a lot of money to the school and/or are celebrities. While moving around might make an interesting essay topic, it is not a hook.
Ok thanks
Is being a first gen student a hook??
Possibly, although much less than the others I listed, IMO. I gave you my definition of hook; each college’s may vary. The important takeaway is that any college, unless prohibited by law, is free to decide what weight, if any, it will give to any of these things in the admissions process. I will also further point out that for a school like Harvard (and its peers) a hook will not make up for major deficiencies elsewhere - the stats need to be in the ballpark. I don’t care how much Tim Murphy needs a defensive back next year, if his best candidate has a 3.2/1200, he’s not getting admitted. So, don’t worry about things you cannot control.
How long after you submitted did you get access to the Harvard applicant portal?
For the supplement essay, should I add the question I am addressing to the pdf version of the essay or not? My essay is on my own topic and not one of the suggested topics.
^^
submitted!!! @ballin2022 and @Tobster18 it’s not necessary to put a question you’re answering
In my opinion, no. If fact, I would not do it even for one of the suggested topics as I think it will come across stilted. e.g. " The unusual circumstance in my life is…" The AO’s are all college educated; they will figure it out.
Fairly quickly, although I did not time it.
When are the earliest decisions released? I know December 15th ish is usually when they come out, but does anyone get them before that?
Dec 12 the portal status will be updated for the SCEA applicant. Good luck everyone.
@noanswers may I know where you located the info?
I submitted last night at 8 and still haven’t received access to the portal

Please note the operative word here is “plans;” it’s always subject to change.
@MaybeHarvard2022 @maralyn99 I wouldn’t stress it. Chances are you’ll get an email either today or tomorrow. Personally, I received access one day (almost exactly 24 hours) after submitting my applicaton :-).
@skieurope Hey, need your advice on this one:
So my SAT scores are pretty volatile. On one test, I have a fairly high reading but pretty, pretty, low math. On the next test, the section scores virtually flipped, with a fairly high math and a low(er) reading. Taking it again in Nov. For now, should I send the two scores I have & then send Nov once it comes in?
