!!! Harvard/UPenn/NYU/USC/BU

thanks again tsdad, it's great to get advice from someone familiar with the process!
applying to UVA does seem like a good idea now.

I have been giving Middlebury some more thought, too, after loooking more into their program... they seem to have some great study abroad opportunities and it looks like they give great attention to their students.

*Anyone out there care to give me some chances for Middlebury?
Or can tell me more about the school?

Thanks.

Just to note, Emerson is not between BU and VCU, it is actually more selective than BU, and even more selective when you get into which major you are applying for b/c they try to distribute, the school is more than film though that major comprises of most of their applicants.

Looks like you have a good list. I would recommend looking at some of the other schools listed above. But as far as Emerson goes, it isn't exactly a liberal arts college so if you want a good general education... you might want to look elsewhere.

ooo and another thought... statistically... you are all set for most of these schools. But if you want to get in to NYU/ USC ... make sure you really ace your portfolio (big part of admissions).
good luck

thanks.

Cre8tive1: yeah I want a more well-rounded education, so thats why I was hesistant with Emerson. i didnt realize it was more selective than BU, though. thanks.

elvenqueen10: yes... those portfolios are KEY :)

*anyone for chances on Middlebury or others?

bump...

middlebury?
others?

Take a look at the Department of Communication at VT:

http://www.comm.vt.edu/

Another safety for you, but one that has a program that you might be interested in, is UNC-Greensboro. See there Department of Broadcasting and Cinema:

http://web.uncg.edu/adm/academics/dept_detail.asp?dept_dd=5

thanks once again tsdad!
checkin' out those links now...
i had no idea about cinema at UNC Greensboro, either...

Hey Cre8tive -- why do you say that Emerson is more selective than BU? I find this very difficult to believe.

There's a film studies major at UNC-Wilmington, which you can combine with production courses in the Communications Department. Also UNC-Chapel Hill has lots of film-related courses in the Communication Department. It's adding a screen writing concenteration, but it's not much for production.

Check out Ohio University. One of the CC contributor's son, name escapes me right now, is entering this fall for film.

Film is a very hot major. Lots of schools are offering it.

Tawny:

If you want to go to film school choose a college like USC or NYU that offeres you the best equipment, facilities, teachers, libraries, and opportunities to make film Equally important, the film industry is about contacts so chose a college like USC or NYU, and there are others, that will also offer you the best contacts in the industry. Will your degree get you in the front door? Will it get you that great internship the brings you to the attention of decision makers? Will you be where movies are made so that you will have your choice of internships and learn how to act like a film professional?

As a footnote to nothing: if you want to get ahead in film, show up on time. Very important. Time is money is the film business.

as another bump...

I wanted to add my chances for:

Middlebury
William & Mary (in-state, HS sends lots of kids there)
UCLA (out-of-state)
UCSD (out-of-state)

PLEEEASE? no ones given me chances for the above schools...

:/

UCLA is a very doubtful admission for any out of state student who isn't 6'5" and 320 pounds and can run a 40 in under 5 seconds. Seriously, it's very doubtful, and not necessarily a good choice for film since it is a two year program. You apply to get in your third year, and there is the risk that you wouldn't be accepted because of its small size.

UCSD is more realistic for out of state students, but not the best option for film. San Diego State U, which is much easier to get into, has a superior film program. But it's an "impacted" program. You'll have to apply for admission and classes will be hard to get.

I think, being from out of state, that UVA & CWM would be matches, not safeties for you...

BUT- they would be CRAPPY schools for what you want to do. I love both schools (they're 2 of my top 3 choices), but for what you want to major in...boo.

VCU- that is a BIG safety for you (decent school, but with your scores/involvement..it's a safety)

BU- good school for your major; like someone elese said- try for a full ride, they're really good with financial aid from my friends' experience

**Just a note- different schools calculate NHS points differently (if you look into the rules/handbook, there is some leniencey with points), therefore, the 200+ at your school might be a lot less or a lot more than other schools depending on their formula...and depending on what they offer in terms of programs, it might look as though you're exaggerating. Where I live, 100 is a RARITY in ITS points...My school is one of the best 100 in the nation for theatre, especially musical theatre. 200 might sound fishy to some admissions officers, you might want to address that somehow...Not a major deal, but just a friendly word of advice :)

there's a leniency thing? hmm. my school actually has a very strong theatre dept.. i thought the points were the same all around. yeah i am actually the only one who has reached 200 pts in... quite a while... haha.

i probably won't write the points down on the app, i just wanted to stress that i've done an obscene amount of theatre.

anyways...back to colleges...

i know UVA + CWM would be crappy for film, but if i don't get into film school (undergrad) then i would major in something else and then go to grad school for film...(at least that is my plan...)

ok. i didnt want to start a whole other "chances" post... but could I PLEEEEASE get my chances for:

*Middlebury (could this be a match?)
*Occidental College (could this be a safety?)

Tawny, why don't you try for USC. If you are truly low income they are fab with financial aid though you will have to pick up some loans. They are very generous. My son was given full tuition, work study and loans. His specs weren't as good as yours but he had specific talents and carried an amazing workload. At this time last year, he didn't think he stood a chance of getting into the music composition program and if he did how would we pay. In the end, it all worked out but he decided on another school. No matter, I will always love USC for what they did.

yes, i am trying for USC.
but the only except 50 freshmen (for the film production major)....
so of course, i need options.

thanks, nonetheless, i am glad to know they are generous.

ANYBODY...

*Middlybury (match?)
*Occidental (safety?)

middlebury?
occidental?

no one? heh... ok...

Waiting for a response from this Cre8tive1 person, who I think just pulls stuff out of his/her arse....

occidental can't be considerd a safety by anyone. i know the admissions staff there. they don't need the best GPA or SAT but they are very very picky. middlebury should be a match, as well as oxy.
