I'm so insanely torn right now. I know both places will offer me an excellent education, and both places have immense diversity...and overall amazingness!

So I'm stuck. Please help me pick.

Tell me what your life is like if you go to either Harvard or Brown.

I would def. go to Harvard, if I were you. But, I've seen many people who chose Brown over other great schools, such as MIT, Yale, and others. Brown is ranked to be like the happiest school in the U.S. (not sure where i read this), and it is pretty liberal socially and academically. At Brown, you won't need to take required courses, but get to pick courses that interest you. Also, Brown is significantly more undergrad focused than Harvard. Although Harvard has much more prestige, you should consider 'fit' very seriously. Obviously, you only get to experience college only once and why not go where you will be happiest at...GL

I would pick Brown. It's an Ivy, so you've still got the prestige. BUT you also have a greater undergrad focus, an open curriculum and insanely happy, collaborative students in a completely liberal and non-competitive environment. Not to mention that Providence is a hip city which is about an hour away from Boston. What more would you want? :)

Both are amazing schools. Brown definitely has a better undergrad focus though, and each has a very different environment. Visit both. I would personally choose Brown, but obviously it is different for everyone. Congratulations on being accepted to both, a very impressive feat in itself!

This is probably a very dumb question, but out of curiousity, are there many cute hippy and/or indie-rock guys at Harvard? Or is it mostly popped-collar like they say? Because I know Brown certainly has those.

There's a lot of talk on the boards today about undergrad "focus," and no one tries to explain what that means...or at best, they repeat assumptions and stereotypes. Harvard College only has undergrads. It is 100% "focused" on undergrads. One of my sisters went to Brown, and she was very happy there, so I don't have anything against Brown. But going head to head, the residential system and location of Harvard are clear winners in my book.

Harvard had a 7.1 acceptance rate this year.
Go there.
No... but seriously.... Brown has no course requirements... which is AMAZING. I would definitely go there unless you really have no problem filling up course credits with required courses... I certainly hate that...

"No... but seriously.... Brown has no course requirements... which is AMAZING."

I believe there are course requirements for your major (# of courses varies by major). The remainder of courses required to graduate (30 total) are up to the student - no gen ed or distribution requirements to fill.

feel free to PM me. i'd be happy to answer any specific questions about my experiences at both (at brown as an undergrad and at harvard as a grad student that advises undergrads)
