Harvard vs. Princeton for Public Policy, Gov, Psychology, Neurosci

Hi Everyone!

I was fortunate enough to get into both Harvard and Princeton, which is making the college selection process very difficult. I don't want this to be a Harvard/Princeton bashing thread, because there are plenty of those on this forum. Rather, I would like to know which school has a stronger program in Public Policy, Government, Psychology, Neurosci. I'm pretty interested in all of those fields, with aspirations of law school in the future. Which school will give me the best education, connections, research opportunities and access to professors?

And if someone could weigh in on the orchestra and debate situations at Princeton and Harvard, that would be great too!

Thanks!

definitely, go to harvard! the law school at princeton doesnt compare, plus if you do truly have law school aspirations then the Yale Law School is easier to get into from Harvard

The law school at Princeton doesn’t compare because Princeton doesn’t have a law school. And can I have evidence on the YLS and Harvard connection?

I’d say their pre-law programs are probably equal. I can’t speak to the rest.

This sentence made me laugh.

I know for a fact that Harvard’s government program is excellent. Not sure about psychology or neuroscience, but I’m guessing they’re also top-notch.

Well, your questions is really broad, but I will try my best to answer it.

When it comes to public policy, nothing can beat the Woodrow Wilson school at Princeton University. Seriously, if you are for sure into Public Policy, then Princeton is the place to be. However, remember that you can’t enroll into Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School in your first year. It is a three year program, so you have to apply after a year of undergrad study. If your GPA is not good enough, you won’t be able to enroll in the program. With that being said, Harvard’s Public Policy is very good as well, but its not AS good as Princeton, at the undergraduate level at least.

Government and Neuroscience, Haravrd beats Princeton hands down. Harvard has the best government department in the nation, well, at least in my opinion. Again, while Princeton is really good, it simply can’t match all the resources you have at the Kennedy school. The research opporunities you will have in neuroscience at Harvard and the wide variety of courses available here simply make the department one of the best in the nation.

I don’t know much about Psychology, sorry.

The alumni who interviewed me for Princeton went to Princeton for undergrad and Harvard for law school, and he also majored in Public Policy at Princeton. He told me some very interesting things about the two schools. First, Princeton does not have ANY teacher assistants, Harvard has quite a few. On the other hand, Harvard has the tutorial system which allows you to get really close to your professors, I am pretty sure Princeton does not.

But since you’re interested in law school, I will tell you one thing. GPA will make or break you application for law school, as much as you hate it, you will need to worry about the GPA. Comparatively, Harvard has more grade inflation than Princeton. So make sure you look at everything realistically.

I hope that helps.

Harvard’s neuroscience program is amazing! It’s actually a major part of why I’m choosing Harvard. I know that Princeton offers a certificate program in neuro, but It does not mean as much as a major (though certainly more than a minor). If you’re interested in both psychology and neuroscience, Harvard has the Mind, Brain, Behavior (MBB) which allows you as a neuro major to integrate classes pertaining to psychology and even philosophy, computer science and linguistics. They even have special summer study abroad programs for neurobiology. These are taught by Harvard professors so there is no issue with credit. I know that there is one in Italy that deals with art and the brain, and another at a major neuro research lab in Japan.

Hope that helps!

I was a Psychology concentrator at Harvard. Fantastic department, great professors and fellow students, lots of amazing research going on. No matter what you become interested in, they’ve got it.

Thanks everyone!

Anyone know anything about debate/orchestra at those schools?
