Harvard Wins Men's Ivy League Soccer Championship

The Harvard men's soccer team won its 8th straight match this weekend to take the Ivy League championship and secure a berth in the NCAA championship tournament.

They'll host Binghamton in the first round of the tournament - the winner of that match then has to head out to Los Angeles to play UCLA (which gets a bye in the first round).

Soccer is the main sport in our family. I suppose the Harvard players were all GOOD when they were high school age. Just how good were they at their soccer--in other words, how good does a high school soccer player have to be to have a chance at joining an Ivy League soccer team?

Most of the varsity players were excellent players in high school - all-state or all-region, etc. They have a freshman named Andre Akpan from Texas (Ivy League Rookie of the Year) who was named to the U-20 (under 20) U.S. National Team as a high school senior last spring.

I know American football has a higher profile, but in real football (aka soccer), Harvard came back from a 1-0 halftime deficit today to win 2-1 over Binghamton. So they advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament - next game is against UCLA (in LA) on Wednesday.
