Harvard

requires 4 years of foreign language?
is that true?
if so im screwed!!

There there.

its a crapshoot anyways, i know people who placed in the top 10 of INTEL with amazing scores that got wait listed…

Oh shoot, I don’t have a language senior year. But I think it’s different for me though.

Honestly, without a hook, your chances were about 3% anyway.

^ lawl

You don’t need need four years of foreign language. The two students from my school who got in only had two years of foreign language.

Nah, if you get over a 700 on an SAT language test, you’re o.k anyway. You just have to demonstrate proficiency  But it’s probably not great if you haven’t taken any foreign language.

i will have taken 3 by my senior year
sounds good??

Is there a difference between 4 credits and 4 years? I have 1 credit from middle school and will take 3 years of foreign language in high school, leaving me with 4 total foreign language credits. However I’m not taking a foreign language my senior year which means I would have taken only 3 years.

^Are you a year ahead of students who came in to your HS with no language experience? If so, than you have taken four years. If not, I’m not sure.

I’m not exactly sure what you mean, but I took French 1 and 2 in middle school, then started out in high school with French 3.

i don’t think that you need 4 years of language to get in, it’s probably recommended though.

Most very selective colleges don’t have absolute admission criteria.

I’ve only taken two and was waitlisted…

To clarify: freshman year, were you in the same language class as people who had no prior learning with that language?

None of Harvard’s high school curriculum recommendations are requirements. They are all recommendations that are sometimes waived in particular cases. That said, you usually have to prepare well to have any shot at Harvard. See

Senior0991- No, I was in French 3. So I had taken 2 years of French, and I was also with people who had taken 2 years of French.

I only took 3 and was waitlisted. lol

First, as TA says, these are recommendations, not requirements.

Second, they are concerned that you understand a language to a reasonable degree, so they are looking at the level you have completed, so you will be fine.
