Harvey Mudd vs Carnegie Mellon (Plus another option)

Hello. Well I got in Harvey Mudd College and Carnegie Mellon's CIT (Carnegie Institute of Technology) for Electrical and Computer Engineering. But I'm not sure which to attend. I know they are both great Engineering schools.

CMU's financial aid came in and it wasn't that great. We had appeal it. Harvey Mudd's hasn't come in yet.

But I also got into Claremont Mckenna College and they gave me a great financial aid package. But I'm not really sure what I would major in there. (Also would I be at any disadvantage by going to a lesser known liberal arts school as opposed to a national university?)

Any comments or advice?
Thanks.

It depends what kind of education you are looking for. Do you want something dedicated to Engineering or do you want something more holistic?

Don’t forget, there are many CMC students who major in some form of engineering off-campus at Harvey Mudd. Also, there are a number of combined programs with other schools. The schools most frequently attended by these students are Columbia and UC-Berkeley. Go where you feel you will fit in best.

I’m actually trying to make the same decision between CIT and HMC. I havn’t gotten any aid letter from Mudd and was actually trying to see if other people did. At least I know I’m not the only one. I didn’t get great aid at CMU either though, so I have to look at it too.

I applied to both CMU and HMC 4 years ago and I remember the CMU aid wasn’t that great but HMC covered all of my need-based aid. Mudd is listed pretty much everywhere as covering 100% of need-based aid, if that’s what you guys are worried about.

@Carrara9
I just got my HMC f.aid in the mail today.
And it’s a lot better than CMU’s. :D

I’m not an engineer, so I can’t really give the best advice. However, I am friends with several Computer Engineers, who absolutely love what they’re doing at Mudd. Since I’m a Computer Science major, they think that I’ll actually understand what they’re talking about, and will go on and on about their latest projects…its kind of of funny. Anyway, Harris and Harris (the main Computer Engineering profs, not married or related, coincidentally) are incredible. Also, there’s a fellowship for doing CE research at Mudd, so that’s worth considering:http://www4.hmc.edu:8001/Engineering/ClayWolkin/

hey Miru, I have known about the Clay Wolkin fellowship from fellow mudder Esquiar. The way you say “Computer Engineering”, you mean an Engineering major taking electives related to Electronics/Electrical engineering and some CS modules right?

every engineer at mudd is required to take “electrical engineering” e84 and “digital design and computer architecture” e85. in addition to that, several systems and a controls class.

those who wish a computer engineering emphasis often take:

high speed pcb design
micro-processors
cmos vlsi

and there are several other options. these courses are very rigorous… and students come away building pretty sophisticated stuff.

hey rocketda, thanks for the info. its surely looks very rigourous :D
