Harvey Mudd vs. Cooper Union

i have one more slot left, my GC told me i'm out of Olin's league. I live in NYC, cooper being free is attractive, but i really dont wanna stay in the city. Which college will give me a better engineering education?

rose hulman is too southern for me

Have you visited either of them?

My guess is Harvey Mudd.

Go to the cooper union if you are going to major in either EE, chemE, Art, or Architecture. Those departments are extremely challenging and consequently very rewarding at Cooper. Furthermore, these departments have (for the most part), the brightest, most talented students in the college.

The reputation amongst cooper union for mechE and CivE is that they're significantly more laid back and easier than EE,chemE. They're still good programs but Cooper is renowned / world-class (i.e. on par with MIT / Cal-tech / Berkeley) for ee,chemE,art, and architecture. The BSE / BE program at cooper sucks and is absolutely ridiculous (it's not even properly accredited).

I guess it's kind of too late for you to apply to Olin now, but I wish your GC hadn't told you that. If you're a good candidate for the other schools you mentioned then you have a chance at Olin too.

I was thinking of the same too. To the OP, why would you be out of Olin's league when you think you have a chance at Harvard?

when did i say i have a chance at harvard?!?

yea, i'll apply to harvey mudd btw

Does Olin require stronger essays and more personality than other schools? That, plus the fact that I'd be vying for very few spots kept me from applying.

harvey mudd's really good for engineering. apply there, but keep in mind only has a general engineering program (you'll be able to do any type with it).

Olin cares about essays and who you are as a person. Admissions isn't just stats driven, although admitted students generally have very good stats. Comparing Olin's admissions process to those of other schools is difficult. Olin is unique, but then again most colleges want to see more than just SATs...

As far as slots go: yes, there aren't too many. Then again, plenty of people still haven't heard about Olin so you have a chance!

pimp have you won lotto? Harvey Mudd is megabucks and give chump changes for merit scholarships

I would say, try for Olin. The admissions deadline I believe is the 6th, so you still have almost a week to get things written and postmarked. If anything, Olin's admissions is better, because they invite 2x as many people as they will admit to "candidates weekend", which is basically like a 2 day interview for you to get to know the school, and for the school to get to know you. Thus, instead of being admitted solely on your essays and grades, Olin gets to add real personal interaction and admit you because of you... I see that as a real benefit, especially if you think you're borderline to get in; since they can "take a chance" and meet you.. perhaps learning a lot more than your essay would share.

That, and Olin is tuition free :). Give it a shot!
