In short, I have a 1920 SAT and 4.45 GPA. My essays are absolutely amazing and talk about adversity and passion. I have a leadership position (Co captain Cross country) and run varsity Track as well. Many of my friends got denied this year from LA (all under 2000 SAT but with high GPAs). It's making alot less confident about Berkeley now as I'm starting to believe all this "holisticness" of the top UC's is BS and its all simply a numbers game....

My roommate had sub-1800, I believe. He’s OOS too, so go figure. He got into L&S as a spring admit (fall extension) and is now finishing his last semester with a Materials Science/Mechanical Engineering joint degree from the College of Engineering (transferred in sophomore year).

Cal is such a large school that I don’t know how helpful listing individual cases may be, but rest assured that many students get in with sub-2000 SAT scores. Scores are definitely not the end-all be-all of undergraduate college admissions, and they know that the SAT only tests one particular kind of reasoning (and this is coming from someone who does well on these types of standardized tests).

Hope this helps alleviates some anxiety.

I got into all top 4 UCs-- including Cal with the supplemental questionnaire:
1830 SAT, 4.3 GPA, and a lot of activities (leadership roles, volunteer work, and a part-time job). I don’t know how much this helps but I’m also a 1st-generation college student from a low-income family.

Good luck. :)

plenty of people have been accepted with SATs below 2000, i know some kid who got in with a 1700

Roommate got into EECS with a score of slightly lower than 2000. He got an 800 in the math portion though.

by state law the UC system has to take the top 10% (or maybe it’s 7%) of all California public high school graduates, not all are going to UC Merced and UC Riverside. GPA rules in Cal or UCLA admissions, SAT score is a distant 2nd factor.

look at say Stanford, i believe a bit lower gpa’s than Cal, but rock star SAT’s. SAT’s are more objective than gpa’s, because UC gpa rankings don’t necessarily factor in the quality of the high school or any AP/honors classes. so a 4.3 kid from a lousy high school with no honors or AP’s can be admitted…and have say an 1800 SAT

My friend got in with a 1650. She is extremely passionate and involved, and has great grades to boot.

My SAT was 1960. Just make sure your UC GPA is high with lots of work involved (4.2 GPA, 8 AP).

@Pacheight: You can’t get a 4.3 GPA with no honors classes. Just sayin’…

1820 here…definitely possible.

<--------- 1800 SAT, 3.6 unweighted GPA, crap for ECs, and the essay writing abilities of an 8th grader

Mechanical Engineering, graduating in 2011 :)

1970 SATI here, but I made it up with other factors, I guess.

4.7 GPA, high SATII’s, ECs, etc.

It’s definitely possible.

Even 1700 is possible, depending on the context of your school.

I had only 1910, and I got in EECS. I did make it up with other factors tho…

I wouldn’t worry. I have plenty of friends here that got in with status similar to yours. Some of them are in EECS. They are all doing well.

The decision period is almost up. Stay optimistic and hope for the best.

Would I have any chance? Admission decisions come out soon. I have a 1940, 5 aps taken and 7 college courses. If it makes it any worse, I was rejected from SD and LA, and only in at Irv so far.

i have a question about how the UCs calculate GPA.

i was told they only weight 2 honor/ap courses, i.e. someone with 4 As and 2 Bs, even if all 6 classes were weighted courses, would have a gpa of 4.0 for the UCs, is that correct?

They count up to 4 weighted classes into the UC gpa but they still look at your fully weighted gpa

No… if you took all aps you could use 6 out of the 8 semesters of Ap classes UC’s count in your GPA for that extra +1.

a lot of people get in with sub 2000 SAT
ever been to a SAT Tutor/College Counselor service center?
all their success stories are about people with ridiculously low GPA and SAT’s that make it into top schools
ex: 1850, 3.4uw gpa, but first gen student, low income, and wrote an essay about how he works in his parents’ hair salon, which is actually in their garage (among other things)
