Has anyone heard from CMU pre-college yet?

Hi-my daughter is going to the CMU acting program-she is from Los Angeles so maybe you can connect

It took awhile for us to receive the information packet from CMU, so for planning purposes I thought it might be good to let you all know about some of the important dates.

6/24: Check in from 9am-5pm. Opening Day is encouraged for parents (though not required). Pre-college Info. table is open during that time for general questions and you can puchase tickets for weekend trips. Welcome Address is 10:30-11:30 with repeat at 1:30. Campus Security presentation 11:30-12:00 with repeat at 2:30. Campus Tours 12:00-1:00, 2:00-3:00, 4:30-5:30. Academic meeting 3:00-4:30. There's also an opening night BBQ and then student stuff into the evening.

6/14-6/16: Parents Weekend. In the evening of 6/15 a talent show and reception will be held. (Alas, this Mom won't be able to attend).

So, hoping this information will be helpful to those families planning to travel from faraway places.

ElliottsMom....there seems to be an error in those dates because you have a Parents' Weekend coming before the start of the program :D.

My niece has also gotten into CMU PreCollege for acting. I don't know yet if she is going as she also got into other PreCollege acting programs and I am unsure of which one she is picking. I can let you know. She is from Alaska.

is there still time to apply?

Parents weekend is July 15th...is anyone going?

Soozie, My d's friend is going for acting and is such a nice girl! If your niece decides to go maybe they could e-mail each other ahead of time.

Are all the pre-college kids going signing up for the weekend extra activities?

My d is so excited about attending!

Hello again!

For those of you who have Myspaces, I thought it might be nice to have a group so we can all connect. Join, post, and spread the word. :D

http://groups.myspace.com/cmuprecollege06

Also, actrss100, the application deadline is May 1st, so you've still got time.

-Hannah

The web site listed parents weekend as July 7-9.. Oh no, I already made reservations based on that! Does the packet list the July 16.. weekend?

Ok I got straightened out, thank you once again to cc or I would have had my own parents weekend!

soozievt -

In all of my excitement, I did mis-typed the dates for the Parents Weekend. It should be 7/14-16. My family will be traveling to the East on 6/14, so that's where my brain is stuck.

Evasmom -

Glad you got that straightened out!!

To distant travelers -

In the booklet of information, I was pleased to learn that there is a special bus route directly from the airport and ending at CMU. We'll be driving our S there for the start of the program, but he'll have to get himself back to the airport alone for the return flight home. I'm comforted to know of this special bus route and confident that after 6 weeks, he'll have the transit system down pat.

The transit system works GREAT! My S uses it all the time to go where ever he needs/wants to go. To and from the airport is a breeze!!!

My daughter got an acceptance letter 2 weeks ago, so is waiting to hear from U. of Michigan and NYU TIsch on May 1st. You have to send in your deposit for CM by the end of May. THought about Northwestern but never got the application in. Carnegie Mellon sounds great....good luck.

So is it as hot and humid as I have heard? Would you recommend a fan? And did your teen actually do laundry???? How helpful was it for college auditions?

Yes, it is very hot and yes you need a fan.

I was recently accepted into the CMU pre-college program as well as the NHSI program at Northwestern (without the musical theatre extension) I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on which program would provide a stronger education. I would appreciate any information at all, I am having the hardest time making up my mind. thanks so much.

My d was also accepted to both and is going to CMU acting because it seems to better prepare them for the college audition process. Other opinions, anyone?

am I allowed to bring 2 fans?-

I went to CMU last summer and it was probably the most amazing experience of my life thus far. I'm here to talk to anyone who has questions about what the program is like (though I hear some things change from year to year)

To travellinghopefully-

first of all, I'm afraid I don't know much about NHSi. I guess I am biased towards CMU, but I do highly recomend it. From what I've heard, its unique from any other program in that it focuses on the audition proccess rather than performance. It's great for someone about to go into their senior year of high school who's planning to audition for colleges. So I'd say go with CMU, but again, I'm biased

to answer your other questions, nytheatermom is right. It is EXTREMELY hot in Pittsburgh. I ended up in a 5th floor dorm with no air conditioning. Also, Yes we did infact have to do our own laundry. Some kids were in dorms where laundry was free (but they had to use public bathrooms and showers). Some kids were in dorms where they had to pay 50 cents per load (but had private bathrooms). It wasn't bad though. I'd never done my own laundry before, so the RA had to help me the first time. But after that I caught on.

And to answer Jessica1289-
My roomate had about 3 fans that she brought (which I ended up being very thankful for). So you're probably allowed to bring your two

Hope some of this was helpful. And congrats to everyone going to CMU this summer. you're about to have the time of your life!

Hi all!

Just wanted to say I am located in "the Burgh" (what the locals sometimes call Pittsburgh in a tongue-in-cheek way) and would be glad to answer any general Burgh questions posted here. You will likely meet one of my students at pre-college - he's a CMU actor who comes in to work with the pre-college students when he has time. You'll definitely have a blast and learn so much - and who knows, I may meet some of you, too, at PCLO shows (where I will be supporting my friends/students in the cast) or otherwise! : )

For others trying to make up their mind about CMU, can you explain how specifically it helped you to prepare for the college auditions?

Thanks Carnivorous plant. She is definitely doing CMU and is very excited. We will be buying fans, no question!
