Has anyone heard from CMU pre-college yet?

has anyone heard from CMU pre-college with an acceptance or a rejection yet? i sent my application in a few days after valentines day and i’ve yet to hear. i know they got it…they said originally it would take about 3 weeks…it’s sure been more than that…i can stand the waiting…i know this is nothing compared to what all of you have gone through about colleges (i’m a junior who awaits that wonderful experience), but i was just wondering if anyone had heard yet

Hi B Wannabe,
My daughter finally got hers out about a week ago, so of course we're still waiting to hear as well. Hopefully it is within the 2 week period that the flier mentioned. It's seems like it's been a longer time for you. Did you send a headshot or video? We just did the paperwork, and got it out quick as possible. Hopefully you'll know soon, keep posting.

yeah, i just sent the typical paperwork also. I had 3 recs, though. but i didn't send a video or anything since they didn't ask....

im anxious to hear and let you know when i hear and if it's good news.....im sure you won't hear in 2 weeks, though...unfortunately....it's been about 6 since i heard and we know they received it....they cashed in our check and everything...

we shall see...........

Well, I wish you much luck, it sounds like such an excellent program to prepare you for fall auditions. Did you apply to any other summer programs? Mel didn't because of a serious dance conflict that she would forgo if she got into CMU's precollege. Otherwise she wouldn't try to get out of it...it's pretty involved. I understand there are some 3 week camps in NYC that wouldn't conflict, but think we may be late applying. I might check into it...Are you trying for the MT program too?

My D applied to CMU -per college about March 14 - and we haven't heard yet either. And she DID hear from NHSI (Northwestern's program) and got into the acting program with the Musical Theatre extension. Now - they need an answer (and deposit) by April 8. Hmmm.

yup i applied for musical theater.....

i actually didn't apply to any others, but I have the University of the Arts and the Syracuse programs as my back-ups if I don't get in to CMU's.....

I sincerely hope that CMU's won't be too hard to get into.....I mean for me, I somehow suspect it will my grades that don't get me in if I don't get in. I'm a normal/ok student (who's done a ton of community theater) in a very very hard private school....but being that for the actual school they only count the academics like 15%, i'm hoping it's the same for the summer program....

Hi janenw,
Oh what a tangled web we weave...

Hi again B-wanna,
My D is kinda on the other end of your deal. Decent grades (Top 10% at a hard all girls private high school), with lots of dance (20 hrs/week--not a big pre-requisite for CMU) and no extra time for any MT at all thru high school (did a lot prior, tho.) So I'm curious to see if they accept her based on not doing any theater for a while.
I looked into CAP21 in NYC last nite, they still have audition slots in April, but I haven't run it by her yet.
Again, good luck & keep us posted!

I don't think you guys need to worry...I really don't think CMU is that selective with pre-college. They had over 100 last year and I know my daughter didn't even send in the paperwork until around May 1st. Someone else I knew sent it in much later than that and was still accepted...

I agree, I really wouldn't worry about CMU, I also have a friend who applied last year really late, doesn't have the greatest resume nor top grades. So unless they changed their policies or more people applied or something, I'd say you don't have much to worry about. They are probably just busy finishing up their acceptances for next year's freshman class and maybe are just getting to the precollege stuff. Who knows, but good luck!

FEW! Thanks Lynnm-- I'm a little late this year with summer apps, although I sent one in to NHSI, my CMU one will not go out for another week or so because my history teacher has requested that much time to write a recommendation which I JUST asked him for. Although NHSI is my top choice, if I don't get into the MT extension I'd like to do CMU... So I was getting worried when reading about how everyone has already sent in all their materials!!

I am curious as to why you would choose NHSI over CMU. I know you you were at CAP 21 with my D last summer - oh wait - is it that you would like to go to Northwestern?

I think I recall that (along with other stellar choices such as Brown, etc. right?)

A friend whose daughter WAS accepted at Northwestern this year did participate in the NHSI program last summer - and she felt it helped to get her into Northwestern.

Choices are good!

janenw

Thanks Lynnm,
I just checked & our check for cmu wasn't cashed yet, could mean that academic advisor hasn't sent paperwork yet? I'll tell D not to worry, though it would be nice to know the summer schedule soon due to major conflict. Oh well

Janenw-
Yes, part of it is that I'd like to have an experience at Northwestern before applying there as I think it'll be one of my top choices for next year. There are a few other reasons, though. One is that a musical theater friend that I really look up to had an amazing experience there and highly recommended it to me. She said that it helped her not only grow as a performer but really put this whole thing into perspective in terms of how she wanted to pursue theater in college and in what capacity. She said the teachers were very supportive and aware of the many paths (not just B.F.A. degrees) that one can take to reach this goal. That type of guidance and support from an acclaimed institution is definitely something I think I would benefit from. Additionally- many of the reservations I've had in this whole B.F.A. vs. B.A. thing is that I really thought I wanted musical theater or nothing- even though for me personally, the acting is what is most powerful and most interesting. And the schools I've been looking at really offer little in the way of musical theater compared to a B.F.A. I feel while I might get solid acting training, I wont have the triple threat coming out of a B.A.- especially since I already lack the dance training and would need to push to make up for that even in a B.F.A. setting. So I need to see if the straight acting gig IS something I'm interested in. The reason NHSI is so appealing is because it is five weeks of straight acting and two weeks of MT. I'd be able to see if I could do the whole non-musical thing without feeling as if I'm missing something. I think I can- and it's something I desperately want to explore. While I could apply for the acting at CMU to get the same sort of experience, I really want to do at least some MT. I wouldn't have the heart to apply for acting and not MT at CMU. But CMU sounds amazing, even with all my rationalizations. If I get into both it'll be tough choosing. I just have a feeling NHSI may be the sort of thing I need right now. Good luck to your D on these summer apps! How funny if we end up at the same summer program AGAIN! It'd be fun to know someone!

Dani

Dani -

And my friend whose D was accepted there for next year (who thinks she might like to act - but also wanted the 'big' college experience) thought it was a great summer. And her Mom thought it definately helped her show a strong interest in Northwestern as a school.

So - with all the other posters stating that CMU is easy enough to get into for the summer - we'll continue to wait.

And - just a rhetorical question. How come the summer program is so easy to get into - and the University is so darn competitive?

Things to contemplate into the night...

janenw

My son sent his application in a few weeks ago. I called to follow-up on it. The admissions folks told me they had not begun to look at applications yet. I suspect they are in the thick of dealing with college admission business at this time.

yeah my mom called today and the person said the same thing, but then retracted it and put her on the phone with "the person who knows more about this." the person wasn't there, so my mom left a message on his voice mail. we shall see...........

i do think it is a little obnoxious to say 3-4 weeks when it's already been 6+....hopefully ill hear soon

U Go Girl!

I spoke to Carnegie Mellon today. They said summer letters will begin going out Friday or Monday and then each subsequent Friday new letters will go out.

(P.S. For the record: I am Broadway Wannabe's mother)

Oh, I love it, a mother/daughter combo on CC MT Forum! I think you guys are the first!

I take that back....AlwaysAMom's daughter, currently at Tisch, used to post here and her mom still does. Come to think about it, BdwayMom's daughter at PSU has posted a little too. In any case, glad to see you BOTH on here!

Good luck you guys.....you are the next crop on this forum and we wish you luck!
