Its a college in Michigan near Grand Rapids. A lot of my friends are going there and it seems like a solid school. Im an average student just looking to get into a decent school. I applied to some Big Ten schools and still waiting on their responses. But Grand Valley is looking like a decent school. My only issue is it seems to be basically unheard of outside of Michigan. I want to go to medical school so im not sure what prestige plays into getting in. My question is is anyone familiar with Grand Valley does it have any kind of reputation outside of Michigan?

I don't know about its reputation, but some of my best friends go there and they love it. Professors are good, dorms are GREAT and even though it's a big school, it's easy to make friends. :) My best friend goes there and she had a 34 on her ACT, lots of APs and great GPA and all that jazz, and she thinks the academics are great.

I know they are really good at football.

Do you want to attend medical school in Michigan or out-of-state? Michigan has some fantastic medical schools. GVSU is a regional school (well-known around the Great Lakes region: Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio).

I have some great friends who go to Grand Valley State!

The pre-med sequence can be taken at just about any college or university (and at most community colleges) in the US. Med school admission is dependent on overall GPA, GPA in the pre-med coursework, MCAT scores, letters of recommendation, and work/volunteer/research experience. People get into med school every single year from no-name places. Even more of them from good regional colleges/universities like GVSU get in.

If you want to know exactly what the statistics are for med school admission from GVSU, you should contact the pre-med advisor. That person will be happy to show you how many of their recent graduates went on to medical school, and which medical schools they got into.

Wishing you all the best.

I doubt that more than a handful of people in New York State have ever heard of it, although that hardly means it is not a perfectly good school. Those who have heard of it are probably Big East football fans who know that U of Cincinnati's coach previously coached the GVSU team.

The few people I know that went to GVSU were smart enough to get into "big name" schools (definitely MSU, probably UMich) but went because they visited and loved Grand Valley. Seems like a chill place with students that are smart but not "competitive" with each other. It's true that it won't be well know outside the great lakes region, but grad schools certainly won't look at it any differently than a big ten school - it's what you did as an undergrad that they want to see, not where you went.

Son is accepted to GVSU, Central Michigan University, Indiana University and waiting for Michigan State University and U of M answers. Interested in comments from parents for in-state vs. out of state fees. Son wants to go to Indiana but for a 4 year degree - possibly health sciences but not so sure...I can't see spending that much more for out of state. Any thoughts?

i've seen it on the sportscenter bottomline ticker :D

I heard of it when searching for "Music for 18 Musicians." They actually did a pretty awesome recording of it.

For the curious: YouTube - Steve Reich ? Music for 18 Musicians CD Trailer

Jerry Rice went there iirc.

Jerry Rice went to Mississippi Valley State

It is very cheap for out of state residents as well.

There are students from my school who plan to attend Grand Valley State University. I guess it’s a okay university, I just wouldn’t attend there. Only two universities in Michigan I would attend ( Michigan State University, University of Michigan- Ann Arbor).

Okay, answer may not be that helpful. Since this thread is about old.

Never heard of it. Probably because I live in Eastern WA.

Edit: Whoa, ***, this is really old. >_>

Just got back from Grand Valley State University—GVSU visit, My son loved it. Wanted to go somewhere warm but oh well! Nice school!

I don’t live far from GVSU, but have never heard of it until recently. Everything, and I mean everything, I read about the school is so positive. My son will be attending a camp there this summer. I can’t wait to see it. I hear plenty about U of M and MSU and not all of it is positive. The OP chose MSU and even he is griping now.

for what is worth … GVSU has an excellent DII basketball team and played in the final 8 in Springfield, Mass a couple times the last few years … and they had a BOATLOAD of fans at the game … I do not know if they traveled from the midwest or were alums who live near … but the school certainly has a ton of school spirit.

How about Honors at GVSU? Sorry for my ignorance but I don’t know much about all this. Hence (1stcolldad name). Any and all info would help, something about this school for our son really interests us. Thanks everyone.
