ever been discouraged by their guidance counselor?

you: "i'm applying to xxxx school."
them: "oh... very hard to get into. you realize that?"
them: "why don't you try a state school?"

you: "i'm applying to xxxx school."
them: "so expensive. you might not be able to afford it."

you: "i'm applying to xx amount of schools."
g/c rolls eyes
them: "xx? that many?"
you: "yes."
them: "can you even remember what their names are?"

ugggh. i'm so sick of the discouraging my choices/sighs and grunts at having to do their job and mail my transcript.

anyone else have one of those guidance counselors?

I completely understand. My GC gets so nasty. A know a kid who actually had the GC laugh in his face over a reach school. Guess what...he got in! He didn't attend, but it was sweet to let her know how wrong she was.

GC at son's school could only say one thing, over and over: safety. It got boring and discouraging. So...son applied to a super-safety this summer just to shut her up. It worked. Now she HAS to address the schools he's really interested in, and stop talking about finding more safeties. We are all totally sick of her and it's only October. The worst part is that she sucks the hope out of everyone - really tragic.

The guidance counselors are my school are AWFUL. It seems like it is the same everywhere, though...

GC: So, are you thinking about private or public universities?
My friend: Probably public.
GC: But... WHY?
My friend: ... money?

Also, my GC tried to dissuade me from applying to 12 schools ("a maximum of 5!!" she said, though I was set on applying to HPY, dartmouth, and BC (where aid sucks) and likely won't get in/ won't get enough money... then what???), and tried to dissuade my friend from applying to only 3 ("a minimum of 4!!!" um... not much of a range there, huh?), and she pretty much forced him to apply to Stanford.
