I just saw this on the Official Musical Theatre Class of 2014 on FB. She doesn’t site her source: Anyone that is interested in Otterbein…according to a group online…they are making calls to first choice students and sending waitlist letters and rejection letters out sometime this week. They are still reviewing TONS of tapes though from auditions and making final decisions based off of those. So if you are waiting, you still have a chance for sure. If anyone hears anything else definitely spread the word!!

I would still love to know how many are wait-listed.

We have not hear Boo from Otterbein, other than her acceptance and merit scholarship.

I don’t know what you mean that the student did not cite her source. ???
The student who posted that she was accepted to Otterbein said that she got a call from Otterbein a few days ago offering her a spot in the BFA in MT class. The source is herself, no?

EDIT: I think perhaps you are talking of a different post than I am, and so I then understand, I think.

Actually the post on FB you are quoting is someone who is paraphrasing what Doctorjohn posted HERE ON THIS THREAD. I believe THAT is the source!
(I did not realize at first what you were quoting as you did not use quotation marks. However, that quote relates to a post upthread by DJ)

I saw that too. I think she may have been referring to this as the source, but who knows. I need to just stop fretting and stop looking at this stuff, but it is so hard.

I looked at things from last year and one boy that got accepted then said that they were asked not to post until letters were sent, which I believe is respectful.

Maybe Dr. John will check the board and clarify this for us. I feel for the folks at all of the schools having to deal with all of the speculation.

One thing is for certain and that is we will all know soon. April 1 is just 9 days from now.

As far as how many are wait listed, I don’t know. But it has to be more than 8! Otterbein is a school that accepts the exact number of applicants as spots in the class (which is 8 girls and 8 boys for MT BFA), whereas most schools (except a few like CMU) accept some “extras” in order to yield the exact number desired, knowing that some will not enroll who were admitted as they have mulitple acceptances. Otterbein of course knows that too but it is a small program and can’t risk accepting 12 to yield 8 because it could turn out that all 12 take the offer and they’d have too many than could be accommodated by the program.

However, since no “extras” were admitted, they have to have AT LEAST four girls and four boys on the wait list to take the place of the 8 accepted students should they not decide to matriculate at Otterbein. I venture to say they likely have more than 8 on the wait list since even those picked off the wait list may not take the offer. In fact, each person on the wait list is likely in line for a particular spot in the class. In other words, if a legit soprano doesn’t take the acceptance offer, a legit soprano on the wait list is likely in line for that spot, and not the belty character actress who is on the wait list, for example, and vice versa.

I doubt the wait list is super long but it is likely longer than 8 people. DrJ gave the typical yield rate at Otterbein but it can be unpredictable year to year in a small program and so there is no way to know your odds for sure on the wait list, if you get on it. But some have gotten off it in the past!

soozievt - just out of curiosity, what is otterbein’s typical yield rate?

Soozievt-I am pretty sure Otterbein accepts 4 girls and 4 boys for BFA MT not 8. My understanding is they take 8 total MT and 8 total acting.

I lovetheatre…Yikes, I can’t go back to edit my post and I KNOW that Otterbein takes four girls and four boys for MT for a total of eight. I typed what I meant wrong! So sorry! if you read the rest of my post, I’m talking as if I am referring to the four female and four male slots in the MT class (I mentioned how they hope to yield 8 total freshmen) and how the wait list would therefore need at least 8 total KIDS on it for the 8 TOTAL SLOTS in the class. So, I knew what i meant but typed the first part wrong. Again, sorry, as it might confuse people.

**There are FOUR BOYS AND FOUR GIRLS in the MT class per year at Otterbein!

dancerr…you asked Otterbein’s typical yield rate. DoctorJohn posted about it in post #46 on this thread and mentions it typically is 60-90% but can vary year to year.

I agree soozie that it would be more, probably much more than 8. I’m pretty well versed with how Otterbein works, I’m just curious to know if D is wait-listed, is she in a group of 12 or 60? You know? I think a lot of the kids that are accepted into Otterbein probably have a lot of choices, as Dr. John indicated, chances are probably quite good for wait-listed kids.

so if we haven’t heard anything yet via phone call is it safe to say we are rejected or waitlisted?

From the activity on that FB website, that is what it looks like. :(

D and I are frustrated…D got a call to her cell today just after 9a CST from “unavailable” (during school, so phone was off)…when she checked phone after school, she saw she had missed a call at 2:10p by about 5 minutes…also from “unavailable.” When she checked her missed calls list, there was another from “unavailable” around 11a.

This might not be from Otterbein, but we are hoping it is…we have no idea who else it could be.
I sent an e-mail to Teri D. explaining the situation, saying if they ARE trying to reach her, to use our home phone number, or to call at a certain time (when D is not in school)…hopefully, they won’t give up (again, if it’s even them).

Fingers still crossed…not giving up yet!

I have no clue, but my inclination is that a college who is making calls to students to notify them of their acceptance likely don’t try to do so during the school day as they know the student is in school and prefer to reach the student and not the parent. Just my inference, not based on factual knowledge of your situation.

PS…no matter what, if it is a college with this kind of call, they WON’T give up and say “oh, we’ll pick someone else!” :D

Actually yes- Otterbein has been making calls during the school day, and it does indeed come up as an unkown number.

There ya go then!

dancerr…how do you know this information? Have you personally been called? Thanks for information you can share here.

will they be making calls all week or have they called all those accepted today?

Soozievt, Dancerr may not want to say anything else, as other’s have said people called may be asked not to talk about it until all the letters have gone out and calls have been made.
Dancerr625, thanks for that bit of hopeful news. We’ll see how the day goes. I will have developed an ulcer by the time this whole fun process is over. ;)

That’s true, luv2croon (though they are all talking about who was called over on FB, LOL).

Hang in there. Yes, it is stressful, but try to see the forest from the trees. Your child will be going off to college next year and has some place to go and presumably liked all the schools on her list and none of this will matter to her next year when she is happily immersed in her college. Also, hate to say it but this is the first of many situations like this for our kids…As someone whose daughters are a bit further along, I can tell you that sweating it out happens over and over again, long past undergraduate admissions! Something to look forward to, LOL!

:( D finally got to answer the cell…not Otterbein…some Ad agency or something. Not sure what to do now…will wait a day or two for the “mail”…she has been accepted to a top BFA Mt program, but we were on track to a much better financial package at Otterbein.

Now, I just need to really sit down and figure out how much it too much, and how much is worth it…I’ll be glad when the decisions have been made, and I can get back to my own theatrical stress relief…auditions for Aldolpho in Drowsy Chaperone at a local professional theatre here.

Ahhhhhhhh! I love The Drowsy Chaperone!!! Hang in there-we haven’t heard boo from Otterbein, but it’s not the end of the world. D has an acceptance to Wagner (President’s scholarship) and Belmont for choice of Commercial Vocal Performance or Classical Vocal Performance. If your D gets an Otterbein wait list, chances are still excellent! Best to both of you!

Nothing here either. I am hoping maybe musical man got some good news since he has been absent here for a few days. If you did musical man, let us know as soon as you can so we can congratulate you! Good luck to everyone with making your decisions on where to go.
