I'm a rising Junior and I plan on finishing Pre-Calc this summer in order to test out of it and take AP Calc BC next year. A lot of people apparently have already finished Calc BC by the end of their Junior year, which is why I'm planning on doing this. Has anyone done this? How did it go and were you able to test out of it? Also those of you who have just finished pre-calc: how difficult was it? how much more complex is it than Alg 2?

I have a copy of the textbook "Precalculus: Graphical, Numerical, Algebraic" by Demana, Waits, Foley, Kennedy. Has anyone used it? Is it a good book? What other resources would you recommend?

I will using the BYU Online Independent Study Precalculus course for my self-studying. Anyone has any experience with that? It seems pretty legit and has tutors available which is nice.

Pre-cal could be considered Algebra III and Trigonometry. It isn’t much more difficult than Algebra II. The book should be fine. Just make sure you understand the concepts.

I’ve heard of people doing AP Calc AB instead of Pre-Calc, but my school won’t allow it and **when I asked CC, they recommended not doing it over the summer **

I’ve done some Trig last summer and it wasn’t too hard. The textbook i have sucks explanation-wise and I just hope the BYU program does a decent job explaining stuff.

Apollo what did those other users suggest? Did they or your school offer an alternative/compromise?

I never took precalc… I took algebra II and self-studied AP Calc AB concurrently. Taking calc II and multivar dual enrollment next year.

Mainly just understand trig really well and look over sequences and series, parametric curves, and polar coordinates (complex numbers if they weren’t in your algebra II class)

I’m doing pre-calc over the summer, too. I’m still debating over Honors Calc or AP Calc AB though. I don’t think it will be a problem taking the course over the summer.

I’m seltf studying it too, my teacher put up her notes on her website and I’m using a cliffnotes books which seems to cover most of the information. It seems like half the subject is a rerun of algebra 2

Pre-Calc was easy, in my opinion. I had a pretty low grade in Geometry, but then I got perfect scores on all the tests in Pre-Calc. It doesn’t get too complex; it’s almost like a mix of Algebra and Geometry.

Personally, I took the first half of honors Algebra II in san diego and then moved to Louisiana. Here, its required to take PC, so I did. Even with only half a year of Algebra II, I got around an 80% on the final, which I took at the beginning of the year. It was a good review, but there was not a lot that was new. Learn the trig identities well, learn about limits, and try to study the algebra concepts and actually understand them instead of just memorizing them and you’ll be set for AP Cal.

Thanks for your replies guys I think I’m definitely gonna go after it and try to take Calc AB/BC next year. I’m actually rather familiar with some of the algebraic concepts covered in Pre-Calc already. My weaknesses are trig and some geo stuff since I never took Geometry but neither did most people. I will be working on Trig with a tutor and Khan Academy(They have some excellent sections on Basic and Advanced Trig).

Has anyone studied Pre-Calc and Trig using just online resources like Khan Academy and possibly PatrickJMT? I’ve only used Khan so far and I love it. The explanations are excellent and the practices are okay(wayyyy too easy in my opinion, but probably just because I’m only at the first couple of chapters.)

julianstanley that sounds like quite a move! hope Louisiana is going well for ya!
