I’m taking the SAT Chinese Subject Test this Saturday and have had close to 0 time to prepare after applying Early Decision. I can understand and speak Chinese but can’t read or write to save my life. I was enrolled in Chinese School up to the 4th grade level and but I’ve forgotten a lot of what I learned.
Does anyone have experience with this test? How would you recommend me to study? I have the two SAT Chinese prep books (Volume 1 and 2) and the College Board Subject Test book.
Also, where can I find the vocab needed for the Reading Comprehension section?
Hi. I’m also taking it this Saturday. I have learned Chinese for 7 years including 2 years in High School. Since you can not read or write, it will be a bit hard for you. However, the test should have pinyin for some questions when it asks you for your response. There is also a listening section. The hard part for you would be the part when they give you a paragraph and you have to answer questions according to the information given on that respective paragraph. The vocabulary shouldn’t be that difficult, but to start, memorize some radicals and practice writing some characters over and over again.
Hey, thanks for the response. It’s good to know at least someone else is also taking the test.
I actually learned simplified even though my family is Taiwanese. And when I said I couldn’t read or write to save my life, I just meant that I wasn’t anywhere near the level of native speakers. I’m thoroughly familiar with all the basic vocab.
I was just really paranoid after looking at some of the practice tests from the ANCCS, because there were a ton of terms that were very specific and hard to understand.
I don’t know what ANCCS is, I will take a look later. However, I found the Collegeboard practice tests easy. If you know more than basic vocabulary, in my opinion, you should be okay.
More or less what I expected. Listening and grammar were a breeze, but I struggled with reading. Omitted 3 and probably missed a few. Wish I had actually studied.
