Has anyone used telestial to purchase cells for study abroad

My D will be studying abroad in the UK. I have done a little research and know she can purchase a pay as you go phone in the UK when she arrives. However, in order for her to have one less thing to do while settling in and settling my peace of mind, I am considering ordering a phone before she leaves. I have been looking at Telestial.com, which has several packages under $100 (GSM phone and SIM card). The only thing that bothers me is the outgoing text charges.

These kids use the text feature more than the calling feature and I can see that at .69 a text, it is very expensive. Is this common charge for outgoing text? Would she be able to get a better deal, i.e., free outgoing text, in London? Is there a shop at Heathrow that sells phones?

Thank you for your input. Trying to put it all together.

My son had his US phone unlocked before he left for the UK and just got a sim card when he signed on for a local plan there.

Don’t buy one in advance, that’s a ripoff.

She can go to any high street or large grocery store and get a prepay phone very easily, and pay more like 10p for a (domestic) text message.

There’s no need to worry about phones in the UK - the system is simpler and better than in the US, and it really is something she can handle herself in about 5 minutes.
