what about calling home from UK -Sim cards??

does anyone have any experience lately with sim card co's in the UK.. I found out that not all sim card co's cover all no access fees or roaming charges type of sim cards seem kind of hard to ferret out. Anyone have experience? thank you.

My D is currently in the UK. When she got her phone over there (we wanted cheap), we were told that her sim was only good in the UK. Through vodaphone she gets 100/min per mo. and 300 texts/mo. for 10 Pounds. when she needs to talk to us in the USA, she skypes.

I am with Vodafone, and I’ve activated (for free!) a plan on my SIM card that lets me call the US for 5p a minute to landlines, and 10p a minute to mobiles. It’s well useful when I need to get in touch with my mother quickly. I’d definitely recommend it.

I also use the Freedom pack from Vodafone where I get 100 minutes and 300 texts for £10. It’s probably a bit much for me, so I may be switch to something a bit cheaper next month.

I just got back from a study abroad trip in England, and there are a couple options that are popular:

First of all, if you have a phone that has a SIM card in it (T-mobile, Sprint, AT&T, etc.), you can just buy a SIM card when you get to the UK that will work with it. You might want to do some research, but I think the phone has to be unlocked first.

Since the SIM cards and plans are kind of pricey, and I have Verizon which doesn’t have SIM cards, I just downloaded Skype to my computer and used it to make calls.

You might want to note that, depending where you are going, there is a 6-8hr time difference from the U.S. to the U.K. so you really probably won’t make as many phone calls as you think. There are tons of phone booths (most pay phones in the U.K. can send text messages, too), and calling cards are cheap and easy.

My son has a MobileWorld SIM that he got from Carphone
Warehouse. We can recharge it from the US too via the Net.

I am on the verizon network back in the states, so I had to buy a new phone over in the UK. I got the phone at phones4u for 10 pounds - it has basic calling and texting features, which is really all you need. As far as the network plan, I chose the pay as you go option for the Lebara network. The Lebara network is great because you get free texts and calls to others in the Lebara network (especially useful if your going with a group of friends) and international calls, including those to the US, are only 4 pence a minute (about 6 American cents).
